Clutch or Transmission problem?

This weekend I took the truck on a small trip and today I noticed that it was difficult to put the truck in reverse. I replaced the clutch to a centerforce 7000 miles ago, it has 12,000 overall. When I put the centerforce in I did not upgrade to the viper hydraulics. Has anyone else had a problem like this, or have an opinion? I did search some posts that have led me to believe that the clutch is going out. I can smell the clutch burning from time to time since installation. When the truck is not running I can go through the gears realitivily easy. I also noticed difficulty when down shifting. I would appreciate any insight on this, whether the problem is the clutch or transmission.

Thanks,
Russell

I have a current problem like yours. I can't engage gear with the truck on, it started a day prior when I had trouble getting into reverse, I couldn't. The shifter felt like it was stuck in a big neutral, all gates were closed and the clutch pedal is weak, no pressure - limp. Shifts through all gears when truck is off though. Had to tow it to the shop. :(

Anyhow, found the cause of the problem, it's a leak somewhere, we suspect it's a small crack in the clutch slave cylinder itself or perhaps the shim? thing wasn't seated properly. Had it back in for a few days, no leaks. Just waiting to take it for a test drive to build up some pressure to see if it leaks again, fingers-crossed.

My 0.02c :)

Master slave Cyl. I had the same problem. When/If you change this out make SURE you use a DOT 5 Silicone fluid. The 04 line runs by the exhaust and heats the fluid which in turn breaks it down quick. You might want to try taking the base of the shifter loose and drive it around to ceter it up. Good luck

Thanks for the help, when I first installed the Centerforce I could smell it burning as I eased it out of the garage, and everytime I take off from an icline I could smell it burning, does anyone know if this problem will cease if I upgrade to the viper hydraulics?

I was always under the impression that the stock hydrolics were not strong enough to properly engage the centerforce clutch. Change out to the viper master slave ASAP.

Search the nfff site and you will find several threads about this. This problem started 4 years ago.

That is a tell tale sign things are not right. Upgrade the hydraulics NOW might as well check the condition of the clutch while you have the trans back down.....

I would at least pin up your hydraulic Lines and wrap them, drain and refill with Motul 600 Racing brake fluid and re bleed the system.

You may salvage a little life from the clutch, or maybe not???

Your best bet is to do it over with the Viper master/slave upgrade!!

Good luck!!

Thanks, that is what I am going to do. Has anyone had any problems with the viper set-up with the centerforce clutch?

I stayed with the OEM clutch disc and pressure plate when I did the upgrade...

The Rob Smith Turbo clutch sucked.... Couldn't even get it into gear...

But with the stock clutch assembly, the hydraulics upgrade and sheilding the clutchlines from all the heat, I put 10,000 miles on the stock clutch and had plenty of launches with it .... It never slipped or gave me trouble again.... The upgraded hydraulic fluid was a must, too ....

Good luck....

The upgraded hydraulics are a MUST !! It also helps to change the sludge in the transmission to Mobil 1 ATF.There is a thread about it somewhere here.
I also happen to have a CenterForce clutch for sale if you find that you need one.

my truck has 54,000 miles on it now. i changed to centerforce clutch at 22,000. i am still running the stock hydraulics in it, have no problems with clutch.
