I'm posting this as an attempt to retrieve some info on the process of CNC mills. We have a 700 pound mill machine over here but its a manual of course. I understand the CNCs are automated to a large degree and operate via computer input, yeah? Anyone know what format a CNC will take for input? Or do you have to have a certain CAM application? The reason I'm asking is I'd like to design a number of billet accessories through AutoCADD or some such program and then turn it over to BOOMER and have him make them. I've already asked him and he accepts outside work for the CNC. The first thing I have in mind is the lower billet grille to match the stock grille. Then some engine dressup goodies. But can anyone tell me some specifics of the CNC operation?

In my experiece I've found using a program called SolidWorks to be a very useful tool in designing and implementation. You would use the program to design the part, then use its accessory program CAMWorks to layout the cutting paths along with the tools you will need. Pretty straightforward, not too hard to pickup. Also this program imports AutoCAD files if you wish.

On an old Bridgeport mill we used to write the cutting paths in text files, then ransfer them over to the mill. Those were a pain in the butt, but the learning experience was worth it.

correct...solidworks, mastercam, etc... Ive designed a few things in solidworks and it turned out fairly well. My buddy owns a cnc shop with 3 mills and 2 lathe's, (not to mention cnc break, cnc punch...) he has a ton of equipment.

Azmal: Haas is here in Phoenix and I believe they offer courses in running their CNC's
Programs used to be written in G code. I dont know what it is these days
