Dealer quote on a tuneup

Took it in to my local dealer for some work recently and they recommended a tuneup..has 68K miles on it now and I can tell will need one..but $900?

$900 that's crazy unless they are replaceing the coils & wires along with the spark plugs.
I think book time to do plugs only is about an hour. At your miles the plugs are over do.

Without knowing specifics of work to be performed this discussion is next to worthless. A "tuneup" by definition died back in the 80's with regards to automotive. Scheduled and/or required service is determined by manuf recommendation, condition/mileage of the vehicle and customer wants. Too many variables...

Dug out the invoice and the recommended tune-up estimate with spark plugs and wires was $988.77..that doesn't include tax. I can still tune-up my old AMX myself for under $75...yeah I know apples and oranges but still $1K for a dealer tune-up sounds pretty high in my estimation.

It's the wire's. It take's a bit to get the intake off and on so you can change the wire's.

The intake manifold has to come off to replace the plug wires. Shitty bolt access. The price reflects the pain! It isn't a half hour job

took me 2 days just to get the correct tools and get it off………… and i scratched my belly up on the damn radiator to boot……….

I love it when people take their unit in to a shop, want quality work, and expect it for peanuts. Anybody care to look up the going mechanical or body shop hourly rates these days. It is 2015 not 1971

The labor rate is continuing to climb. If you are in or near a metropolitan area it is easily over $100 / hr.

I'm 120.00/ hour for Diesel and specialty vehicles. All other vehicles we are 110.00. I'm cheaper than all the other dealers in my area by about 10 dollars an hour.
Book time to R&R intake is 3.5/hrs and spark plugs is 1.0 hr.

So, spark plugs and wires for $1000. Seems a bit high but I don't know cost on wires. Side note I've turned over 150K on stock wires and coils. Both of which will be replaced in the coming weeks. If it were my truck I'd replace spark plugs, serp belt, tensioner pulley and any fluids; brake, pwr steering, coolant, engine etc. If not done I'd be looking at replacing the oil exchanger lines and the HP line off the pwr steering pump.
