Diesel starting question....

.....dad's 04 3500 used to have a really fast start up. It didn't turn over much at all. Now it spins over more than twice as long before starting. Any ideas waht it could be? TIA.

glow plugs, have them replaced or at least checked.
 
If it's a Cummins, it doesn't have glow plugs.

Can you give any more information? Any difference between hot and cold?

Yes. No glowplugs on the Cummins. Cold start takes longer than warm. Seems like an oil pressure problem. Performance hasn't decreased any. It just takes longer to crank.
 
low fuel pressure? i know the older dodge diesel 99 to 2002.5 had bad problems with lift pumps causing starts like u are talking about

That's exactly what I was thinking, and if the lift pump tanks, the fuel pump is right behind it and that's a good chunk of change...
 
it is the lift pump put a fuel presure gauge on it ,,if you keep trying to run it like that you are going to get one hell of a bill to fix it ,,if lift pump goes out for to long you will trash the injector pump,,a lift pump is around 140 to 200 bucks ,,,if you smoke the injector pump also youy can add to it over 1500 to 2500 for a injector pump ,,thats not counting labor ,,

have you had the filter changed on it latly??
 
could be an intake heater prob. since ya mentioned harder cold than hot. is the transfer pump mounted on the block or in the fuel tank???
there is an update for the transfer pump.
might want to touch base with the Dodge house
 
Got to agree with the input you have received. Heater grid, or transfer pump.

However I'm curious about your comment regarding oil pressure?:dontknow: Why do you think it may be related to oil pressure? What are you seeing?
 
Uh, well, it's my dad's so I'm just relaying the questions. I have told him over and over that any question of any kind can and will be answered on this website. He said there is a difference in how fast the oil pressure gauge rises depending on how long it takes to spin over. Or sumpin like that? So basically we need to check on the lift pump? He replaced a small fuel pump not long ago that is mounted on the frame rail.
 
If it is an '04 Dodge it has a black plastic lift pump mounted to the rear of the filter housing. It is no longer serviceable by Dodge or Cummins. If the lift pump goes bad you have to get the fuel pump kit from Dodge that goes in the tank. The intake heater will not cause a slow start in ambient air temp of 50 or warmer. There is a TSB from Dodge on the electronic fuel pressure regulator that bolts in on the side of the high pressure fuel pump. It is either that regulator or he has an injector that is bleeding off fuel pressure. The commonrail Cummins runs 23,000 psi on the fuel lines and fuel rail. If an injector is bleeding that pressure off it will make it slow to start.

thats what i was a thinkin. have installed 2 of them. not too bad of a job
