Do we have to remove heads so lifters don't fall? -for cam install

Thats awesome man, when you plannin on doing the install? I would love to assist and lend a helping hand. As well as drink some of your beer!
 
No, you dont have to remove the heads to replace the cam. After you remove the push rods and spark plugs you can rotate the crank. The cam will push the lifters to their highest point (and stay there)....you should be able to remove and install the new cam with the lifters in. I have seen it done on tv as well as Boomer has done a couple I believe. I replaced my lifters during my install.

That was going to be my next suggestion. This is how I swapped a cam on my friend's LS1.

:dito: :dito: :dito: The stock lifter has a plastic guide piece that will hold it up in the bore so you can get the cam out.

I was incorrect about the tie wrap tecnique, was thinking about something else and was wrong about the Gen III being done this way.
 
Is a custom tune\VEC needed for an aftermarket cam, or can the stock computer or standard performance flash adapt?

It depends on how much more radical your new cam is. If it's pretty close to stock you might be okay with the stage II flash, No way to know for sure without dyno runs and tune check.

If you are going to a significantly more radical cam you can use a VEC 2 or VEC3 in conjunction with the flashed computer or you will need to have your pcm reflashed with a custom tune.

Personally, I would want to check the tune with the new cam, either way.
