Engine Block Q's and A's

If anybody has taken their engines apart and have seen something that doesn't make sense to them post up the question here with pics and lets see if we can get it figured out.

I'll go first with these pics.

Here is a pic of the bare block upside down looking at the mains from the top:

Here is a closeup of 1 passage (right under the main) out of several passages like this in the block:

What are these passages designed for?

That would be the oil passage for the mains, then rods.

Are you talking about the oval shaped passage right under the main to the left which is directly under the thread of the left main?

Are you sure that's an oil passage? Take a small wire and check around in there.
I don't think that is a passage, but I'm not positive.

Those are not passages, look at the pic of them before the block is cleaned.

They are windage holes. They allow the pressures to equalize between the area under the pistons, as they rise and lower.

Hey F'in Bill, I think they also act as a scraper of sorts to help remove oil from the counter wieghts on the crank to redoce drag etc.

Yep they accomplish two things. Airflow and weigh reduction.....

And for those that are machining oil reservoirs into their mains check out the ones from the Magnum v-10. 180 degrees
