As of the last week or so I notice that my truck makes a weird squeaky noise when it's first started and sometimes when it's semi-warmed up.
The noise is similar to a (low volume sound) squeaky belt, at first I thought it was my wheel from sitting a day or so and maybe the brakes were touching slightly, after a few power brakes I realized that's not the problem...
Yesterday I opened the hood and it was coming from under the valve cover, I couldn't really tell which side but sounded like the drivers side. I checked the oil, it was on the low end of the dip stick so I added a little and thought it helped until today. Now it's doing the same sound again...It gradually gets quiter as I drive....any idea what this is??

Mine has done that since day one.

The entire valve train was changed out (not for that reason though) and it still makes that exact sound, as you described, when the engine is cold or cool.

60,000+ miles later, that mystery noise is still just that, a mystery. I think I read somewhere it is the oil filter valve assembly, but I have had a number of different brands of those on there too.

Now I just turn the radio up and it goes away...

That's what I do radio up and it's gone...I was more worried for when I get ready to spray!

Trying to attach video but my phone won't send to youtube b/c 3g is all f'd up!

Maybe the ideler pully, the little wheel that keeps your serpinetine belt tight.:dontknow: :dontknow: :dontknow:

I thought it was a belt issue too....I checked belts and seems to be ok...it's definitely coming from under the valve covers...

A video is worth a thousand words....

Mine doesn't sound like that...

It is easy enough to pull your valve covers to have a look around, and the gaskets are re-usable. If you do, just watch the plastic cover on the driver's side wiring harness; it gets brittle and likes to drop crap into the heads when disturbed...

try the stupid stuff first kicken, in the morn , or when it does it hit the belt with wd or something, and check your crank pulley also, make sure its tight, noises can seem like one place and be in another.
other thing is sway oil wieght, see if it changes, and check for leaks.

do all the simple stuff firs before ya go yankin stuff off bro, even check the ps fluid , make sure its good and full too.

Good advice...It does it when it's warm....when it's really hot it goes away or it's barely noticable..:dontknow:
I just want to find out what it is before I introduce a 125 shot to the engine

sounds like the serpentine belt to me.... :dontknow:

had a similar sound on mine til motor got hot, changed the belt, no more noise...... :) when i looked in the belt grooves, there were small pieces of metal embeded in it..... no more noise like that since. :)

I'm gonna do like Stink said and hit the belt with some WD real quick and see if it fixes it...
I have a gatorback belt I should have put on anyways a while back!

tried the wd on mine, but with metal in the belt, it didn't stop the squeak until i replaced it........ good luck. :)

You have a couple idlers one real close to the valve cover noise will travel go to auto parts store get a cheap stethoscope or before start up spray thin oil at the idlers one at a time.

Had a similar issue to what you described, turned out to be the power steering pully. It was slightly out of alingment and was wearing the belt. I paid for the new belt and dealer paid to realing the pully. seemed to be coming from the vlv cover area to me as well until I took a stethoscope to everything.

Mine does the exact same thing! At least im not alone. I had this problem a few years ago and the dealer replaced the serpentine belt and it went away. Well now its back again. Ill be taking off the belt soon.

It's the idler pulley. Mine sounded EXACTLY the same.

pull the belt of and then start the motor to isolate the noise...Hopefully it does go away when you pull the belt off.

P.s. dont run the motor without the belt for more then a minute

It's definitely coming from the pulley now that I got a few minutes to sit and listen. Tomorrow I'm gonna swap the belt and check if it's the pulley.
How hard is it to change the pulley?
