I have been watching the World Rally Championships...

Does anyone have experience in setting up these cars?

I am just very curious about what is involved in creating suspension systems that are capable of withstanding the beating they take in the races...

Does anyone have a web site or publication reference that would allow me to gain some insight?

The Ford Focus seems to dominate with some competition from Citroen.

Looks like some real driving fun!

i bought a 02 for my youngest son a few weeks ago. gave like 4500 bucks for it. dont see how you could make it go fast without a lot of money...lol

Found this on Wiki:

The Ford Focus RS WRC is a car built for the BP Ford World Rally Team by Malcolm Wilson's M-Sport and based on the Ford Focus Climate 2 litre production hatchback, developed to compete in the World Rally Championship. The RS stands for Rallye Sport and the WRC for World Rally Car, the car's FIA specification.

Like all contemporary World Rally Cars, the car is heavily modified from the production version, with which it shares only the basic shape and some parts of the bodyshell. The car features four wheel drive, rather than the front wheel drive of the road car. The engine used in the 2007 Focus WRC is based on Ford's 2.0 Litre Duratec from other models in the Focus range as rallying rules do not permit the standard 2.5 Litre engine of the Focus ST. As with most rally cars, the 2.0 Litre engine is heavily modified and performance was increased using a turbocharger. Also the 2009 Ford Focus WRC uses a Ford 1998cc Pipo built l4 Duratec WRC engine. Four Cylinders, 16 Valves, Bore 85 mm and Stroke 88 mm. Pi electronic engine Management system. Garrett Turbocharger (with requied 34 mm inlet restrictor). Air Intercooler. and a Catalytic Converter.

Power is 300bhp at 6000rpm and 550 Nm of Torqueat 4000rpm (That is 405 ft lbs!!!!!!!!!)

Transmission is a Permanent four - wheel drive with M - Sport designed active Centre Differential. Pi electronic differential control Units. M - Sport / Ricardo Five - Speed sequential gearbox with electro - hydraulically controled shift. M - Sport / Sachsmulti disccarbon Clutch

Suspension is Front and Rear: Macphreson struts (front)and Trailing Arm (Rear) with Reiger external resevoir dampers adjustable in bump and rebound. Fully Adjustable fabricated steel links.

Brakes are 300 mm Brembo ventilated discswith Brembo four - piston monoblock calipers for Gravel.

Weight is a minimum of 1230 kg

Wheelbase is 1800 mm

Length is 4362 mm

Width is 1800mm

Tyres are Pirelli 650 mm for Gravel [1]

The 80's were the time of the Group B rally cars, or as the came to be know, the Killer B's.

These were the most extreme and powerful rally cars ever built and raced. They not only killed a number of drivers/navigators, but they also killed a large number of spectators when the cars went out of control.

Cars often had 600+ hp, and needless to say, the speeds they reached was far beyond what they acheive today.

They were fun to watch, but they had to eliminate the class due to the number of fatal accidents.

US spectators want their cold beer, hot dogs and bathroom facilities. Going out in the woods to watch a race just did not appeal to them.

I went to a rally driving school in Florida about four years ago...it was a ball...all day for $400 morning was training on a hardtop short course...all afternoon in the woods on dirt roads...

Never did get the hand brake turn down...

This stuff really looks fun...but really expensive!

The school I attended had two vehicles for the road course that we shared...a neon and a WRX...

We drove them as hard as we could and it was just one of the greatest days of my life! The road course was 7 miles long and toward the end of the afternoon we were really getting the hang of four wheel slides, switch backs and getting air on the jumps!

The WRX was quite the machine and still is today, I remember the Metro 6r4 coming out and Peugeot Renault 5 Turbo 2 also. Huge horsepower for 1.6litre motors on the French stuff.

WRX though is this good:rock:
