Gibson Header Install Questions

I know it is pretty dirty in there,But here you go.The hole melted in the wheel well was before i put the shields on.

Wow!! Thanks for taking the time to post the pics. It helps alot and is appreciated you took the time to do it. I think my best option is to see about putting some heat protection where I can and then see about swapping them (If Gibson will do it). The JET coat and shield option are about as much as the headers and I will do that if left no other choice. It gets hot as balls here in the summer so things will be cooking under the hood.

Not sure what I am going to do yet. Am noticing a burning rubber smell when I had the truck out last night. As soon as it is hot and idling I smell it. Seems to be coming from the driver's side.

If you used the header gaskets that came from Gibson, that's probably what your smelling, eventually goes away. Best is to use stock metal gaskets from the dealer, about $18 a piece. I still have the Gibson gaskets on, but have a set of the stockers come spring time ready to go on.

That's funny:D :elefant: :elefant:

Annu actually get his hands dirty:) :D

No offense Annu but I usually have all my mechanical work hired out too. I have a tendency to screw things up really bad if I work on my own stuff.

Go dyno your truck with the stock manifolds then bring it over. We can do it at my place. Then go do another dyno.

Going to get the headers Jet Hot coated. The place is in PA, not far, so I am going to drive them there myself and drop them off. Thinking of going with the Extreme Sterling coating due to the higher drop in skin temps also considering the Sterling Silver (haven't made up my mind yet price will probably decide). Any thoughts on this? Feel free to put your 2 cents in.
I also bought a blanket for the starter, some stainless zip ties, and ordered some shielding blankets and tape from Summit Racing, this should remedy the heat issues. Hopefully I will try to remove the headers on Monday or Tuesday, going to warm up a little here (NJ), currently 20ºF, way to cold to be futzing around under the hood. Thank you for your comments and advice. You guys rock!!!

From Jet Hot's site:
STERLING SILVER is our brightest looking finish. It comes out looking like a very highly polished aluminum. This coating can withstand temperatures up to 1,300ºF and will reduce skin temps on pipes by about 300ºF. It is a very low maintenance finish, easily cleaned with soap and water. You can use any non-abrasive aluminum polish to bring out the shine if it ever gets dirty. It will never turn blue or gold like chrome or stainless. This coating works great on normally aspirated engines and any parts that need to have a show quality finish.

EXTREME STERLING is very similar in appearance to Sterling but not quite as bright. It will hold its shine 200ºF higher and can actually withstand temps up to 1,700ºF. This amazing finish normally cuts down about 400ºF on the skin temperature of pipes. This coating is great for mild turbocharged or supercharges applications, or on pipes that have turned grey with other silver finishes.

How long does it last? Like I said smells like burnt rubber, similar to the results of a burnout :burnout: . Think its just the gasket?

Why the change to the metal gaskets? You having problems with the Gibson ones?

A lot of questions in the post. huh? :toilet:

Why not put the gibsons on now and see if you like them. If you still want something different we can do it again.

Which coating did you get?
I went with the STERLING SILVER.
My stock manifold temps went from 625ºF to 350ºF.

I doubt you'll need the heat shield on the starter, but it's a nice touch.
:)

Thanks Kevan. I was trying to find out what the manifold temps were.

about a week with the smell and yeah smelled like burnt rubber(but keep an eye on stuff anyways). no real problems, but the metal ones are supposed to seal better. might want to look into some locking header bolts too. made a long drive from NY to VA a lost four bolts along the way.
