GLAMIS — A teenage Norco girl and a 9-year-old boy were killed Saturday when a Union Pacific train slammed into their vehicle at eastbound Highway 78 in the Glamis Sand Dunes area, the California Highway Patrol reported Sunday.
The unnamed 15-year-old girl died of blunt force trauma at the scene of the 3:25 p.m. crash, the CHP said in a press release. The boy, of Glendora, also died of his injuries after being taken to the Children’s Hospital in San Diego.
A third passenger, who was 15-years-old and of Glendora, suffered a ruptured spleen and traumatic injuries but survived the collision, the CHP said.
The teen was driving a 2006 Yamaha vehicle on eastbound Highway 78 and stopped west of the railroad tracks not far from the Glamis store as the crossing arms were down.
At the moment the back end of a slow moving train that was heading north had cleared, the teen drove around the arms, the CHP said.
But as the driver attempted to cross over the train tracks, a second train that was moving south struck the left side of the Yamaha. The impact pushed the Yamaha in a southerly direction until the train stopped.
It was not immediately known why the teenaged girl was allowed to drive the vehicle without adult supervision. The CHP did not identify the victims at press time.

Report from someone who knew the victims:
The survivor is Amanda Gonzalez, please pray for her.
I heard that 75% of her brain is dead and if she survives, she
will be paralzed the rest of her life and more than likely a vegetable. The boy who died was her brother Jacob. Her other brother was following and saw the whole thing. My children go to school with them.
