help help 4 thoughts on a durango

im lookin at a new ride does anybody know anything about these suv's its a 1998 DODGE DURANGO Engine: 5.2L (318) MPI V8 Magnum it has 140,000 miles seam like alot but i guess if their good motors i wont worry the guy swears its all excellent but i figured i check with u guys and see your thoughts my questions are how many niles will theses motors take are the trannies that come in them any good and just overall how they are.your comments and thoughts are greatly appreciated im new to this whole dodge thing (lovin my srt10) so i thought i talk to the pros

Look for a 2000 or newer with the 4.7, good reliable engine. I put 110,000 on my Dakota and it still ran like new.

140,000 is alot of miles, the 318's will run for a long time but like said above, the trans, water pump and all the other goodies will shit the bed causing you to dump cash into a vehicle with a pile of miles on the clock. I would steer away if I were you, unless your getting a deal of a lifetime on the thing. The 4.7 would be your better bet, I have one in my 04 Grand Cherokee and like said already, it runs like the day it was new..just my 2 cents.

I've got a '94 Ram with the 318 (5.2). It's got over 180K on it and it still starts right up and doesn't smoke. Regular oil changes and a distributor cap and rotor / wires/ plugs is all I've done. Transmission has been rebuilt. I think the Durango runs the same drive train. I've always heard the Durango's get crummy gas mileage. I've always liked the R/T version as was mentioned earlier.

until i got rid of my 95jgc, it was great...165k and didn't leak a drop of fluids...

i replaced the tranny at 140k...but hell...it didn't owe me anything...just cheaper to fix than by new at the time...

i'm still kickin myself that i sold it...woulda been a great basher!!

If the front suspension hasnt been rebuilt it needs to be! very common for ball joints, inner tie rods, and control arm bushings to be worn out on that vehicle at over 100k

Don't do it! Crappy gas mileage, busted tranny, water pump, front suspension, window motors blow, heat goes out...what did I forget :dontknow:

I had a 99 with a 360 in it. I get better mpg with the 10 then I did with that thing. Only problems I had was the window motor blew out on the driver side and once I replaced it the passenger side went out. It did do good in the snow with 33" tires on it.

Wow, I have an 01 R/T and love it. Only part that has gone out was the resistor pack for the A/C fan. Also had a 99 SLT regretted selling it when I went to Japan. It had the 318 and never had any problems. I saw around 18mpg (highway) out of it when I wasn't dogging it. My 360 on the other hand averages 14mpg and 13 with the Procharger on it. If it has the third row seating it makes a good people hauler (only put kids in the back though). Guess it depends on how much they are asking for it though. I am always on the lookout for another Durango or a Dakota Quad Cab but like I said I haven't had any problems and think they are great trucks.

i did not make it to 5,000 miles on ball joints & bushins, on my '02 RC Dakota.

You forgot the intake pan gasket, prone to have vacuum leaks and burn oil because of the piss poor intake design.

THE SIZE IS GOOD,I WAS LOOKING AT THE DURANGO FOR MY WIFE AFTER MY SON WAS BORN, BUT I WENT WITH THE ASPEN, 07 ,22K MILES, NO PROBLEMS YET,,
