Housing Bailout???

Yeah, that's exactly what we need, a depression.

Tens of millions homeless, even more unemployed and on the brink of being homeless. The stock market collapsing, leaving retirement funds worthless, hope the social security payments are enough, and that the government can continue to make them with no tax income. Banks failing, so I hope you have all you money in cash under your mattress. And speaking of cash, you best have a shitload, cause prices will go through the roof.

The US would lose it's standing in the world, as we would become dependent (or should I say more dependent) on loans and handouts. We would no longer have the cash to support our armed forces, how many guys are going to stay in and not get paid?

Panic in the streets, which these days usually leads to riots and looting. People be killed for a bag of groceries. And a real cutback in the numbers of law enforcement personnel to deal with the problems.

This is not the 1930's, the reaction of the masses would not be the same. A depression would do more harm to this country than every other disaster, whether natural or manmade, to date.

I'm not quite sure how that would be a good thing.

That's just plain bullshit. Years have nothing to do with it, it is the behavior of the people, both those that are governed and those that govern.

Annu, I really don't care who said it. I think it's bullshit, plain and simple. That's no different than Nostradamus, if it were that easy to forecast, everybody would be stinking rich, which would mean that no one was, or something like that LOL.

Well said. Things are already scary. I can imagine my neighbor trying to rob me for food for his family, or the other way around. My 72 hour kit will only last so long. I knew I should have left that ration of fruit cocktail alone but is was so good.

Both of you gentlemen are missing my point. The American people think hardship is losing the cable signal for an evening, the buffet shutting 10 minutes early, or an exceptionally long line at the movies. We as a country, have enjoyed quite prosperous times for a good while. But, we as a people and a government have done it mostly on credit. This never used to be the case. People would save for the things they needed. This helped to teach an apreciation for quality and a responsibility to take care of your belongings. I am not wishing for a depression. (although the description you provided above of society, doesn't sound like the same one in the past when people bragged about never locking their doors.) It's just the people I know who made it through those tough times seemed to be of a special quality, more "neighborly", never losing sight of what really matters. It will suffice, at this juncture, to say only that I have know tough times as a child and an adult. I borrow as little as I need to, I work hard for what I have, and I am humble enough to accept who I am ,and ,who I am not.

Yea, that is exactly what I want my family to go through is a depression. F**k that! The housing market is a huge deal that is affecting everything else. Let the cycle take it natural course to help things. The real estate market crash and the current war at the same time is causing big problems. A depression is not the answer to everything. And to those of you that support it will wish you had not if it happens.

Anyone out there that believes this is a collapsing housing market has no idea what a collapse is. study your markets, outside of the 73-74 & 01-03stock market "pull backs" we have not seen any major market pull backs. We are not in a real estate market crash, this is a pull back because people don't know how to manage their money. When housing prices fall below 1999 levels then you can call it a crash!

A depression unfortunatly is the only way to increase the buying power of our dollar:(

You are right, "crash" was the poor choice of words. We are on the downward slide of the real estate cycle that may last a long time. Why do housing prices need to fall below 1999 levels to consider it a crash? Why not 1989 or 2001?

01 is similar to 99 in the fact that the stock market was all the rage still.
as far as 89, 91 would be a better comparison. If you bought in 89 it took a while to gain any equity!

Remember Germany's depression when they needed a wheelbarrow full of cash to buy a loaf of bread? Doesn't sound like an increase in the dollar. It could fall hard against foreign currency, which could spell disaster in today's global economy.

I believe right now in the USA you need a wheelbarrow of cash to buy a loaf of bread, or fill your gas tank(2 if you have a ram SRT10), pay your electric bill...At that point Germany's currency was worthless, ours is now. You are talking about a nightmare inflation that happened in Germany.wholeale prices rose dramaticaly from 1914-1923...hyperinflation. People who invested in gold fared very well. Also jewelry, antiques...etc. Common stocks in German companies did OK.

We can also talk about Fiat Money inflation in France and americas Deficit and the Dollar vs Gold. I loved studying this stuff when I was in high school and have read up on any major market crash or depression.
