How did MPH originate as the guage for speed???

Im just guessing here, but it probly has something to do with how far a horse can travel in an hour..dont know why they picked 5280 ft for a mile, butt it was probably the distance from Bubbas to Cletuses house..

It was officially standardized at 8 furlongs of 220 yards each by the Weights and measures Act (British) in 1824.

But I can't find anything about why we use miles per hour.

I wonder which automobile got the first speeding ticket... maybe a 34' caddy with a v12 going 80 down main street I forget his name (famous pholosipher) who had a wooden box with cogs("gears") that droped marbles as he rolled it marking a mile maybe it was in rome or something saw in on the history channel long time ago people still dont know Exactly how it worked but they have a pretty good idea. Anyways this was used as the first mile marker, dont know why they would need to know this so far back :dontknow:
