ITB intake

I hate to start a new thread if this has been covered and talked about, I did search but I may not have used the right “key words”. I am curious and I’m sure it has been done, an ITB (individual throttle body) intake setup. And a rough estimate on funds to make it work. I’m sure it’s going to be one of those things that’s not worth it unless I’m racing, or whatever or other intake manifolds, designs. Curious to see what is out there for these V10s without searching the dark cobwebbed corners of the internet lol.

The Gen III/Lambo Intake is a sexy design. Is it a good Manifold? Fine, but not great.
Porting the Gen III just seesaws torque and horsepower numbers and provides limited results. Extrude Honing...about the same.
A front-mounted E.F.I. Throttle Body style Injection setup would have all kinds of distribution issues on such a long Intake. One for each cylinder wouldn't be practical.

I sent a GEN III Intake to Wilson for modification and although they rarely reject a chance to modify one, they did reject it.
Instead, 13 grand would buy a brand new design which leaned heavily toward racing. Because that's what they do (and do very well).
3 other companies were also contacted and came back with largely the same result.

We had interesting results with the Gen II Intake on a Gen III. It provided a boost of 50 lbs./ft. of torque in a narrow r.p.m. range but NO horsepower increase. That Intake is too ugly for me and looked like it belonged on an Industrial application, like maybe a boat(?) My opinion...

I.O.W. limited options. If you know someone that understands airflow and happens to have a large enough 3D Printer, possibilities are endless!

I wonder if a duel TBI down draft style would work better? One TBI for each bank(basically like the 8.0L only down draft) intake runners would be different length though. Or a front and rear setup for the back 5 and front 5. I think you would get more power with a down draft than a front…. Then we actually utilize the ram air induction on the hood without having a bunch of duct work. Just thoughts. I don’t know anybody with a 3D printer that understands air flow. If the 8.3 was more in demand I think the R&D would be worth it, unless it’s in the racing world, I don’t see the justification of the cost of such an intake for street use unfortunately.

If you tape some lightweight ribbon in front of the factory hood scoop and go for a highway drive, they rarely point toward it. Because it just isn't a high pressure area and is quite turbulent.
The flat front grille and the opening for the o.e.m. airbox on the passenger side does a better job.

Put your hand on the front of the Intake immediately after a drive. It is considerably cooler than the back if the Intake. The o.e.m. setup works and doesn't draw in warm underhood air.

That hood "scoop" does help to bail out engine heat and low speeds and when stopped though.

Yes, our Gen III has been out of production for 20 years and was limited production anyway. A worthwhile new design would also be limited production and still costly.

You'd see restriction via vacuum at w.o.t. with high-flowing heads if the o.e.m. Manifold was terrible. As with many parts, they can be improved with enough time and money.

Remember years ago SILVERBACK did a test on the airodynamics and the hoodscoop intake and found just what Ronnie stated ,, the thread should be on here somewhere … Its one of the things that made me wonder about the Volant air intake system and kept me from getting one way back them … Looks cool but needs to be fully functioal as a Ram air intake ..
