Did the normal oil change and had them put in 8.5 quarts of Royal Purple 5W-40.. Most of the guys there had never heard of it which should have told me something...
Then I asked them to drain my transmission fluid and put in Mobil 1 ATF... The "head" mechanic just about flipped out. He said "you know you have a manual transmission, right???". I told him that I had done my research and the Mobil 1 ATF was just fine for my transmission. He said that in 30 years of a mechanic that he had never heard of such a thing.. He just about threw a tantrum and guaranteed that my tranny would be destroyed if I used it... I assured him that I did my research... Needless to say, I was very careful watching the lead tech put in 4 quarts into my transmission....

Thus is why I prefer to do my own maintainence and modifications . . . :)

That is kinda scary. But it doesn't surprise me either. Some of the manual trannies recommend ATF. Today I was told by a sales clerk at an auto parts store and said the whining noise on start up is caused by air in the oil filter. I have always heard it was something to do with the filter design. Hence I have always used mopar filters.

His explanation sounded good, but I just don't know.

You make sure you drive by his shop every day and yell transmission is still good:D

My local service center made me sign my invoice saying they were not responsible for any transmission damage.

Just beware if they try and tell you that your headlight fluid is low or your muffler bearings are rattling. LOL

Little joke we played on customers back in college as a "licensed" car inspector. Didn't fail anybody (in case you were wondering), but it was alot of fun seeing their faces.

Portlandsrt let me know when you need more RP. I can get at 10% over wholesale.

For Sure!!! I paid $9.99 a quart for 5W-40.. I'll drop you a PM. Might as well buy a case from you. THANKS!

I worked at a quick lube place when I was in high school and was the smartest tool in the shop. Looking back, I didn't have a clue, but I was still the "lead tech" and had more experience and smarts than the rest of them. I'm not tooting my own horn, just making a statement about the quality of techs that are attracted to those positions. :):dontknow:

That's what I was thinkin', there's lots of mtx's that reccommend/require atf fluid. including SHO's from '89-'95. '89 was the first I'd heard of it, but I know that wasn't the 1st tranny to use it.

ok i must have missed some thing ,,,you guys are running atf in your manuel tranny ,,,did that in 70,s ,,,does this make it a bit easier to shift ,,,what are the benifits v/s price,,,

They're to specialized nowadays, used to be just a handful of major categories like brakes, ac, engine, electrical. now I suppose belt replacement is a seperate certification also, along with lt. bulb replacement, wipers, etc. Seperate classes for each and can only perform if certified.

We started using ATF in some of the top loaders in the 1960s.
Yeah, I remember using it in my 1985 Mustang GT's Borg-Warner 5 speed.
