Good idea but not to be a killjoy or anything but a huge % are search engine spiders, spambots and the like. Administration can view ISP addresses and a lot of them, I'm talking 40%+ are "junk". Having said that I'm not sure how this forum registers "users online" some are set at 15 minutes some have it set for 24 hours.
