now here's my question i know someone that has a Cummins I-6 Turbo desiel.
he replaced the turbo and has a k&N CAI and some other stuff (IE: computer stuff)
Not sure what he runs but he does dump some black smoke... quite a bit in
fact... should i be concerned?

Wow...So I guess I shoulda' bought a diesel then.

Living in the oil capital of North America (Alberta) all I see all day long is Diesel trucks.... and every last one of them shoots black smoke as the "Rig Pigs" step on it going light to light.. hah. That's why I ended up buying this truck, it's unique a Diesel isn't.

With what you have I take a guess that you could take him, depends on the size of turbo he put on. The CAI and Computer isn't enough, i beat those guys with my 06 QC which is a lot heavier then yours.

funny that this was brought up I almost posted a kill about this. Last weekend I was minding my own going to get some milk. I notice an extended cab CTD 4x4 in my mirror next to a 4 door CTD dually. The extended cab kept nailing the throttle and puffing out a huge plume of black smoke. The other truck just kept rolling. He then got next to me and did the same a few times but we had traffic in front of us. The car in front of me turned and I moved up and into the other lane so the diesel could get next to me. I saw him roll up and black smoke puff so I nailed it. Bad area by sun city in georgetown, speed limit is 45 and the motorcycle cops are all over. I couldnt resist and didnt let off until I was well over 110 and he was in the mirror. We came up to a light and he pulled up next to me and pointed at the vette in the cross lane. He then said not fair I only got propane.

The "other stuff" is the first thing you should be concerned with.... JUST a new ECM program can add 150-180 HP.

If he upgraded his turbo and exhaust on top of that... YES, be VERY concerned.

Most high horsepower diesels have stacks instead of exhaust just for horsepower gains. By the way I have had my fair share!! If you see a Diesel with stacks and black smoke BEWARE!!!! But if your quick enough off the line you should still be able to pull him!!!!

I hear ya... and agree with most...

But, not ALL high HP diesels have stacks. :dontknow: Here is an exhaust that is popular.... MBRP "Cool Duals" :rock: they make 4" and 5" TURBO BACK systems for all diesel trucks...

i watched a reg cab run a 11.3 at hayes mopar weekend a couple of years back in commerce,ga. my brother subscribes to a diesel truck magazine that had one putting out 700 hp on biodiesel

failed to mention that he has a ram 2500 4x4 older year (1998?).. but yeah
i believe he told me he ran a 13.4/13.2? something like that

the really nice thing about the cummins is they are 250,000 miles plus motors,i don't think with heavy mods they will last that long,they get better gas mileage than gassers.thats why i have one(04) and the wife has one(07)

Yep.. good motors. I have the Cummins ISB (5.9l) in my 38 foot motorhome...plus and I tow a trailer that weighs about 8.5k loaded... and I cruise along at 75mph effortessley, with all that, I weight in at around 35k lbs, and 64 feet long, and I still get 11mpg!! =)

I only have installed the Banks Stinger Kit (Upgraded Turbo, and Computer), nothing else.

- Upgraded Turbo
- Custom 5" downpipe, and all mandrel bent exhaust, free flow muffler, was 5 inche exhaust all the weigh out.
- Custom Programmed PCM
- Intercooler

I was making around 600hp, and 1100lbs of torque.

From a dig, without power braking, I could light up the rear duallies at will.

But she was a smoker!!

And you had a 7.3 Leeker. The 6 leekers put out more power.... if you could keep the HEADS attached to the block. (I had a 2005 6.0) :rock:

Sorry Homey love ya but you are possibly incorect in this instance! One of my good friends is Tom Matson JR. and I can tell you that his Dodge dealership recommends these guys and when I had my big truck no probs! but let me know if you know diff!!!

I have now bought 14 vehicles from Tom myself.

I have also been aware of Dr. Performance since 1993. Dave Smith Motors at that time sold his modified trucks until he was screwing customers over.

Were you ever a member of the TDR (Turbo Diesel Registry)?:dontknow: Is so you would know what I'm talking about.

A fairly good place to go for modifing a diesel in the Seattle area is the Power Shop in Enumclaw.

If I remember right, just the basic Cummins 5.9 engine without any accessory or flywheel weighs in the neighborhood of 1200 to 1300 pounds. They make for very nose heavy vehicles.

Needless to say, they do not handle worth crap.

I myself would have to say if you compared Apples to Apples,people might come away with a different attitude towards Diesels !!!I will say,that if I knew then what I know now,it might have been a hell of a lot harder decision to be in my SRT10 !!!I have a friend with an '04 CTD.Came over to Naples to have a double disk clutch installed in it.Afterwards,we went to a local shop to Dyno the trucks.Mine 407hp/416tq.His (with ONLY a TST Box)put out 464hp/646tq !!!!NOT BAD FOR A FARM TRUCK !!!!With the addition of a second TC,he's looking at around 700-750hp/12-1300tq !Then if take into consideration the price of our trucks and put that difference into a Diesel,you decide which direction you want to go !!!:rock: :rock: :rock:

I sold my 03' Ram CTD 4x4 for my SRT10. I love both trucks equally. As pointed out earlier, a 3/4 or 1 ton truck does not handle well. It is not meant to either. However, with about the same amount of dollars spent in the Headers I just bought for the SRT10, my 03' Cummins was putting out close to 500HP and 875 Ft/lbs of torque. I had to add a SouthBend Clutch since the stock would just slip in 5th and 6th gear.

The main problem from keeping my diesel from going fast was the tranny gear ratios in the NV5600. 1st through 3rd got you to about 45MPH. I would normally start out in second, since first was just a granny gear. If I were racing someone, I would start in 3rd (not recommended to often since things tend to break with 875lb/ft of torque and 7500lbs of weight). On the highway very few vehicles could touch me. Going 65 in 5th gear, all I had to do it wick the throttle and I was going close to 100 in a few seconds. That was with a 7500lb truck, Quad Cab, and family included. I put quite a few Mustangs, Vette's, and Camaro's to shame on the highway. They might have been able to get me out of the hole, but once I got rolling...look out. I had 35" tires on it too.

I am definitely looking to get another diesel. I can't wait to see what people start doing with the new 6.7 Cummins. I used to say there was nothing like the smell of diesel in the morning...he he.

Lately i've gotten alot of diesels that want to play. No runs yet, but the diesel is a open playin field, the mods are endless, all you have to do is add fuel air and adust fuel timming and a stock engine is laying out huge numbers. That being said if you hurt a diesel, get ready to put out some cash!
