In retrospect of proof reading all that I typed below, don’t feel inclined to read it. It's rather longwinded and I tend to ramble on when I'm sleepy lol. I’ll probably read it in the morning and be like “wtf?†to myself… But if you have some minutes to kill, do please read on.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - -

This might should be in the misc. section but I will be asking some automotive related questions so bare with it or skip ahead :D

Maybe this most recent tangent of thought process can be attributed to my definite lack of an attention span... It seems every time I turn around I feel a different calling for what to do with my life or time... Problem is, I really just want to do it all... But I do have a small handful of interests that I would like to pursue if given the choice... One of which is quite broad and branches into some other fields and that is automotive. More specifically, car shows, audio competitions, and the fabrication of those. Then there's racing, and drifting. One of the others being a craftsman of many types, leather, metal, making weapons and armor (medieval style) and then there's wood working, carpentry/architecture.... I guess simply put, I like making things and going fast.

But regardless of my varied range of interests, I think I should give serious consideration as to my future. I seem to be very impressionable... For instance, I turned my TV on for the first time in ages (TV referring to broadcasted media in this case as I always watch movies or anime) and it was still tuned into Speed TV and I watched a number of shows and now I'm all inspired (again) to pursue automotive customization/design for the car shows and I'm ready start ripping panels and pieces out of my truck and 300ZX and going to town on them to teach myself how to do it and maybe take it up as a business venture if I find it lucrative. And also to go burn up a pair of tires practicing how to drift lol (in the 300ZX anyway... though how neat would it be to do it in a QC SRT-10)

Aside from the rest, it seems like there is a lot of money to be made in architecture. I'd pursue the Victorian style (Late 1800s) but modernized interior of course. Next is making of the weapons, armor and leather stuff, being an apprentice to literally the world’s best living true master blacksmith. This is a lifestyle in of itself and lends way to much travel (which can be good but also rather tiring) Realistically though, it’s not a very high profit field and it's mostly the love of the craft and doing something almost no one else can do anymore and I do indeed have a certain lust for such things... but at this point in my life I feel like I'm missing out and I would be better to pursue it as a hobby and later in life pick it up again full time.

Then there's computers with my pretty strong interest and talent in digital design, game development, etc. But no sense in drawing this field out.

I have some connections that could get me in to the bottom end of movies making, probably nothing special or any good positions though. That’s something I've given consideration to, but again, not going to roll in any major bucks. Not for a long while anyhow.

I guess my questions in all this is for this forum at least is.... What steps should I take now, to ensure myself a profitable setting within the automotive field of my interests... say if I wanted to get into racing professionally... I know there's some current or ex-racers among us, any tips for me? Any car show gurus and customizers out there?

I think what I'm really getting at, is how should I go about making money (with the aforementioned interests) so that in the not too distant future I can do everything I want eventually anyway... I think it's about time I start thinking about a course of action for such things.

so.. there

First, I would look at Supply and Demand, also long term - will there be a market for your product/interest/craft? You can be the best at what you do but still need the customers to buy your product.

Second, set your goals.
- Establish a Vision.

Third, establish a plan.
- Draft a Mission.
- Set Objectives.

Fourth, financial backing for your plan.
- Do you have it?
- Can you get it?
- Loan?

Program on how you will implement your Vision.
- Business Plan

Suggest a business workshop if you are serious. Got to run. Good luck with it. I'm sure you will get a response from someone in your shoes here online.

Racing professionally is like wanting to become a singer.

A lot of it is being in the right place at the right time. Lot's of good singers out there that never make it out of the clubs in their home town. And a lot of them are better that some of the big names. Same in racing.

Some of the drivers out there are only there because they brought sponsership money with them so they could buy the ride. Others are only there because of the media hype they can generate. Once again there are many good drivers out there in the SCCA level that never make it to the pro level.

To be a top driver now days you not only have to be a good driver, you also have to be a corporate spokesperson. If you cannot present and sell yourself along with your sponser you will not last long.

you don't really mean it, it's just your marketing guru inside your head messing with your mind :)

This is something I believe in . Go where your love is and let the money follow . I have found over the years that being happy and content with what you do is much more important than how much money you can make . I know some will dissagree and thats cool but no one person can tell you what to do only the little voice inside . I know ppl who are dead broke and the most happy carefree ppl you will ever meet and I also have friends with millions in the bank and are misserable . Money cant make you happy only you can do that . Cars and stuff are really a hard way to make a living and with the TV play making it all so enticing too many ppl have jumped in the ring ,and many of those with more money than skill or sence . Now as for a professional driffter LOL that sounds almost as good as head matteress tester ,let me know if you find that one as I might apply .Did ya ever think life might just be what we live for not money and in the pursiut of money we sometimes forget to live .

Its ironic you mention that because music is yet another of my interests and incidentally, my mentor in black smithing happens to have played with a lot of the rock bands, in his day anyway. And he's freaking awesome on any instrument you can think of. He's done it all himself so he's a big inspiration too. And he's got connections but.... lol I'm not very good yet so I'm not really even thinking towards that sort of thing :D

But I agree, in racing, it's a lot of chance and you need a lot of marketing & such.

I think it would be cool to spend about year each working at places like a body shop, mechanic shop, performance shop, audio shop, upholstery shop, etc. then take various jobs in architecture, etc. etc.... I could jump from job to job the rest of my life and get good at all sorts of things, but that's not going to get me any real cash built up. So... Rich first, play later... hmm maybe something will present itself. I'm already involved with building houses and that has potential to make me well off, but not rich.... lol Maybe I seem spoiled but its good to be ambitious right? :D

Notice how differently I talk being awake vs. sleepy?

Very true. If you are not happy in your job, it does not matter how much they pay you.

Even though I will bitch at times, and I work really long hours, I do enjoy it. I get to do things that haven't been done before, and it's a real rush when it all comes together.

If the time comes were I have to go back to designing mundane shit 8 hours every day I will retire.

In my past life I've been successful in various fields such as retail holding mundane jobs to Regional Mgr for $20B company, Custom Security consulting, Airtraffic Controller, Employment Law etc. About 5yrs ago I got into the self employment arena and have a communications company, own 2 tattoo shops (funny huh?) and play in the real estate business for fun/profit. Keeps me busy and I have fun doing it. Cash wise its not what I used to make but down the road I know I'll make up for it or at least know I'll have fun trying.

Early in my careers cash was king but as you know there are trade offs. Now cash is second with emphasis on fun. Who knows that might change given my career history. If you find something you love to do and can make bank give me a call I might be interested in teaming up with you!

Sad but SOOOOOOOOOO true.

Yeah, that is also coming from a guy with an engineering degree and being a Federal worker....so who knows about marketing

Just say the hell with it all, buy a rig and be free:rock:

Be your own boss, set your own times, life is but a never ending sea of concrete and I'm the captain of a 70ft schooner:D

You know, I've actually thought of that too as a possibility, and I hear it can make some good money if you have your own rig. Who knows, maybe I'll join you on the open roads some day ; P

I'm not as obsessed with money as it may sound in this thread, but I am a realist to some degree and I understand money makes the world go 'round. "money can't make you happy" everyone says that, everyone knows that. And if one can be happy either way, I think I'd like to try to have the green. And I want to be able to 'retire' at an early age. And retire to me just means I get to work/play on whatever I love to do without worrying about income.
