After changing out the Oil Cooler lines and the Power Steering lines, I thought my oil drip issue on the garage floor was over.
This morning I back the truck out and just about shit. 2 dime size drips on the floor just to the right of center, just forward of the drain plug.
Got under there a little while ago and found 2 missing pan bolts on the right side. Put 2 new ones in and checked the rest. All needed to be snugged up.

Is this common on this engine?

Been 85,000+ miles and never a problem----unless VENOMOUS1 (Scott) is doing it as routine maintenance. :dontknow: Don't think so as he never mentioned it.

I honestly dont know if its a common problem on these trucks to be missing oil pan bolts but I wouldn't think so. I know when I changed my oil and power steering lines oil still dripped for a little while but it wasn't from the lines leaking. It was from all the oil that had blown all over the place and in places that I couldnt clean real well so that may be part of the same reason you are still seeing oil on the ground. Installing the 2 missing bolts sure didnt hurt anything though.

Thanks. Been around cars, trucks, hotrods for many years. Never seen oilpan bolts fall out. I have only had my SRT 10 for 2 months and could have missed seeing them missing as I was not looking for that. I do know it had a clutch put in back in Feb. as I was in the dealer where it was done when I bought it and they ran the VIN and told me the history. I can't see why they would have been removed at that time though.

The 2 drips that had me under there were motor oil. The oil cooler lines were the first ones I did over a month ago. And I degreased the block after I did the work.

It has been sitting all night now. I hope the floor is dry when I go out there.

It does sound like someone down the line dropped the ball on tightening up the oil pan bolts for whatever reason cause I just dont see any vehicle out there having a problem with oil pan bolts loosening up. I could be wrong but sounds more like a user error on whoever was messing with them before you. If you done your oil lines a month ago then any left over that you might had missed would be gone by now I assume. If all of your bolts were loose on the pan including missing 2 of them then that could be the issue you were seeing as it could be leaking around the oil pan gasket. It might not be a bad idea to get a new oil pan gasket and swap it out along with torquing to spec the pan bolts. I hope the best for you though when you check the truck out this morning

i see that your beast is an '04 model.

she is probably a prime canidate for the oil pump by-pass valve update.

have ya noticed any "whinin" nosies when she first starts up or at different temps & r.p.m.'s as she warms up???

might want to check your valve cover bolts. mine were real loose, with only a couple of oil pan bolts semi-loose

Oil pan bolts aren't supposed to fall out or become loose on ANY ENGINE.

Tighten them up and put some miles on it. Then check them again.

I do hear a whine on cold start that I traced to the idler pulley.

Oil pump by-pass update? Can you elaborate on that?

I did find 2 valve cover bolts loose about 2 weeks ago, when I did the PS hoses.

Thanks.

The other thing you have to watch real close on the '04's is the balancer bolt. They will back off and come loose. The balancer and by proximity the lower drive pulley will slide forward. That will make the belts and idlers / tensioner pulley whine and eventually the belt will pop off.

If you look at the water pump pulley the belt should track back from the front and you should have about 1/8" to 3/16" or so of flat in the front behind the radius.

There was a tech bulletin for it don't remember the number. You simply remove the bolt, clean it and the hole and use some good red locktite and re-torque.

Thanks, I'll check that
