i think this was in a thread before but i cant really find it but is it worth getting headers, because i was thinking about porting my stock manifolds. i just wanted to see wut every one thinks before i make a move.
 
well....from what ive' learned on here the cost/h.p. gain is terrible. $1000.00 bucks for a few hp) getem' coated for $400.00! after i install mine i will have a set to send to a member for $100.00 plus shipping.

You can never make manifolds flow, perform or sound like a good set of headers. No matter how many hours you invest in porting them.

BTW- when Sanchoba said "get 'em coated", he's referring to JetHot Coating (not ceramic).

Porting the stock manifolds would almost be a waste of time and money. They are VERY smooth on the inside. Casting has come a long way since the 50's when the inside of manifolds looked like Carlsbad Caverns. Mine were smooth from the factory, then even smoother when they got back from JetHot.

The stock manifolds on the Gen.3 Viper engines are basically short tube headers. The only difference is that they're cast iron instead of stainless steel (stock ones are about 15-20 lbs. heavier than SS). Depending on the application, long tube headers might be necessary (and certainly look nice), but the stockers should cover you without issue.

EDIT-
One other thing....
My original manifolds ran over 600F with normal driving.
After getting them JetHot coated, they were just over 300F.

Ceramic coated or not, you won't get that kind of temp. drop with headers.

Also, a cooler engine bay translates into HP and MPG. I don't have numbers, but logic tells me so.

i just installed some B&B long tubes on my truck and i defintely notice the torque
down low and that the truck does pull harder.... so while they might be a bit
expensive i can say, if you have the cash, go for it. they also sound nice :D :rock:

The B&B headers alone are $2895.00 here in Canada. They would likely provide a bit more power (esp. low end torque) and would be a good thing to do to support any future mods. But the factory manifolds are pretty good.

If you really want headers I would strongly suggest long tubes with an inch and five eighths primaries over the one and three quarters.

The B&B 3" Hi-Flow cats (mids) I installed cost me a few m.p.h. at the track and the truck regained the lost power when I reinstalled the 2 and a half inch pipes with the 4 factory cats. The 3" pipes were too big and likely caused a drop in velocity. Probably a good choice at lower altitudes, with more mods than I have, and or in a supercharged application.

I would not bother porting the stock manifolds.

Hey....glad to hear it. I think you'll be happy with the JetHot on your truck manifolds.

I haven't had any problems with the heat shields being off.
Well, that's not entirely true: they are taking up space on the rack in the garage. :)
My belief is that if you drop the manifold temps significantly, the heat shields aren't really necessary.

For a nice starter, non-boosted/non-blown setup:
- JetHot coated stock manifolds
- Full cat delete (if legally possible)
- A decent exhaust system
That should net you really good gains w/o a major dent in the wallet or melting a credit card.

When you start going with turbos, superchargers and N20 systems, you will need to re-evaluate your exhaust setup, and possibly switch to headers.
Several folks here run superchargers with the stock (non-JetHot coated) manifolds, including the world's fastest SRT-10 quad cab. Stinker's "Sidewinder 1000" twin turbo goes through more air than a space station, so he's got a radical custom header/exhaust setup.
Cheap? No.
Necessary? Yep.
Badass? You bet.

When it comes time for you change your rig, stop on back and we'll get you hooked up with the right setup....or at least give you the right options to choose from.

headers or stock manifolds for 100 bucks? which?
 
For a NA enging you should definitly go with a set of long tube headers and High flows all the way back. If you have a FI engine you should definitely keep the stock manifolds ( get them coated) and go with the same High flow system of you choice all the way back.

If anyone has interest I have a set of Extrude-Honed, Jet-Hotted factory manifolds for sale, and B&B midpipes w high-flow cats to fit. Less than 3K miles on them. Will sell individually or both for $900. Just PM me.
