i spent about 10 min today working up a chart for mpg vs cost of cars.
i have been doing my research for a long time now on different makes of cars and what you will save when you spend more on a car capable of higher MPG.

i have been looking at cars from 25MPG like the crown vic to the town and country
to the 35mpg cobalt
to the 45mpg VW diesel

each one will cost more. due to the value on a car with more mpg in the used market.

a used diesel VW with even 100,000 miles on the clock will set you back over $10,000
a new cobalt with its potential to get 37mpg is $12,000
a crown vic used from 2007 with 100,000 on the clock will set you back about $5,000. so can i make up $7,000 in the 200,000 miles left on these cars? this chart was to help me decide.

i used $3.00 per gallon, because this is about the average price in the past two years for me.

100,000 traveled miles. at $3 per. 200,000 miles 300,000 miles

15mpg 6666 gallons $20,000 40,000 60,000
20MPG 5000 gallons $15,000 30,000 45,000
25mpg 4000 gallons $12,000 24,000 36,000
30mpg 3333 gallons $10,000 20,000 30,000
35mpg 2857 gallons $8,571 17,142 25,713
40mpg 2500 gallons $7,500 15,000 22,500
45mpg 2222 gallons $6,666 13,332 19,998

the difference between say a ford, focus and a crown vic after 200,000 miles would be $4,000.
between a focus and cobalt would be less then $3,000
and a cobalt and a diesel jetta would be just over $2,000

so if i got a jetta diesel, financed it at $10,000, that would cost me $1,000 in interest, after 200,000 miles i would save $4,000 over a crown vic.

was just hoping this might help someone else.

added 32mpg and a cent per mile category.
100,000 traveled miles. at $3 per. 200,000 miles 300,000 miles CPM

15mpg 6666 gallons 20,000 40,000 60,000 .20
20MPG 5000 gallons 15,000 30,000 45,000 .15
25mpg 4000 gallons 12,000 24,000 36,000 .12
30mpg 3333 gallons 10,000 20,000 30,000 .10
32mpg 3125 gallons 9,375 18,750 28,125 .09
35mpg 2857 gallons 8,571 17,142 25,713 .085
40mpg 2500 gallons 7,500 15,000 22,500 .075
45mpg 2222 gallons 6,666 13,332 19,998 .066

You really need to factor maintenance expense for a diesel versus gas. The diesel VW will only go about 150,000 miles per turbo. In addition to that expense, the diesel will need cold start maintenance as well. Any parts for the VW will have the VW additional charge.
The Crown Vic will most likely be cheaper since parts are more common. Tires will be cheaper since they're old school sizes. Above all the car itself will be nicer to drive than either the VW or Cobalt.

wow you do know a bunch about cars... i am impressed.
the last vw i had the trubo was about shot at 140,000. but at that it would just need a rebuild. a rebuilt transmission for the ford cost 800, and the vw would be a 5-speed. an engine swap on the ford would take 3 hours, where the VW would be 8 hours. maintenance would be higher on the VW. but using it 99% on the highway i am wondering how long things would last. the last one i had was used 100% stop and go.

I'm not sure about the Ford for expected miles on transmission and engine but, I have seen them at 250k with both the engine and tranny still stock and working fine with normal maintenance.
I have even seen the trucks at over 200k with stock drivetrain.
The Ford is kinda crappy as you can't get the 5 speed in it.

I would go with a new Chevy Malibu... you can get some great rebates on them right now! And, according to that goofy football buy on TV, it gets better gas mileage than a Honda Accord. :dontknow:

If you catch the fine print at the bottom of the screen when they're talking about the "better MPG than a honda accord", its only by 1 in the city and 2 freeway. My QC sticker said 9city/12freeway but I can consistently get 16 mpg freeway so Chevy's statement doesn't mean much in real world driving.

Hey scoob, when your not working do you take the sign off the front of the car and wrap it around yourself? :marchmellow:

but you know you can buy a diesel jetta for about 15k-20k, it also holds the world record for milages at close to 70mpg, and you really dont have to do anything for 80-90k miles. we had a 04 and 05, both got 50+ on the highway. the newer models are much more reliable aswell
