i spent about 10 min today working up a chart for mpg vs cost of cars.
i have been doing my research for a long time now on different makes of cars and what you will save when you spend more on a car capable of higher MPG.
i have been looking at cars from 25MPG like the crown vic to the town and country
to the 35mpg cobalt
to the 45mpg VW diesel
each one will cost more. due to the value on a car with more mpg in the used market.
a used diesel VW with even 100,000 miles on the clock will set you back over $10,000
a new cobalt with its potential to get 37mpg is $12,000
a crown vic used from 2007 with 100,000 on the clock will set you back about $5,000. so can i make up $7,000 in the 200,000 miles left on these cars? this chart was to help me decide.
i used $3.00 per gallon, because this is about the average price in the past two years for me.
100,000 traveled miles. at $3 per. 200,000 miles 300,000 miles
15mpg 6666 gallons $20,000 40,000 60,000
20MPG 5000 gallons $15,000 30,000 45,000
25mpg 4000 gallons $12,000 24,000 36,000
30mpg 3333 gallons $10,000 20,000 30,000
35mpg 2857 gallons $8,571 17,142 25,713
40mpg 2500 gallons $7,500 15,000 22,500
45mpg 2222 gallons $6,666 13,332 19,998
the difference between say a ford, focus and a crown vic after 200,000 miles would be $4,000.
between a focus and cobalt would be less then $3,000
and a cobalt and a diesel jetta would be just over $2,000
so if i got a jetta diesel, financed it at $10,000, that would cost me $1,000 in interest, after 200,000 miles i would save $4,000 over a crown vic.
was just hoping this might help someone else.
