Mother in-Law in her last days

Most of you old timers on this site know my mother in-law has been in a losing battle with cancer in her neck......she spent 8 weeks at MD Anderson in Houston......they did a full larenjectomy and removed her voice box and much tissue in her neck.......she recovered from that only to find they did not get all of it.....so she elected not to have surgery again since this time she would not be able to hold her head up without a brace and would be on a feeding tube for the rest of her life...........................this was 7 months ago..........the tumor is now the size of softball on the side of her neck........it grows 1.0cm each week......................................it is very painful and she has to take many pain meds to cope with the pain each day.....................my wife has been sleeping over at her house each night......we have day nurses during the day................last week her mom had some congestion and coughed really hard and the tumor broke open and painted the bathroom red.................my wife soaked two large bath towels with blood before it stopped......this we are told will most likely be the way she will die....bleeding to death................................I would have been sick......but my wife was a trooper and stooped the bleeding and cleaned up the mess.............She is a DNR and is on hospice....thank god for those people.

I can't say enough about my wife and her strength during this really tough time.......she is very special to me........here is a picture of Gigi (her mom) and a friend before her first surgery.

passed away was that i didn't spend alot of time with him..

Walt, it's never easy to deal with, and my thought's and prayers go out to you and your family during this most difficult time. I can tell you I have been into many homes for people like your Mother in Law throughout my career. I thank God when the Hospice people are on site when we get called out to tend to a patient who is failing...in life.
When the present becomes the past...know there is no more suffering, and that she will be free from this. The grief that has been encountered on these scenes is often associated with a relief that I cannot describe... but have witnesses on many occasions. I can tell you that it is most noticeable when Hospice is involved.
I can only hope and pray that your mother in-law can be somewhat comfortable for most of the time, and please know that being there, and helping her during these times allows her to always know in her heart the Love that you all have unconditionally poured out to her.... forever.

Sorry to hear this Walt. I know what she means to you and your wife. Through many of our past conversations I understand how you and she feel. There are really no words I can say that will make you feel any better. Just know I Love you very much and I will be there for you when you need me, just like always. I feel your guys pain and I share with you the burden of impending loss.
