Been thinking about doing gear swap too. Anybody care to comment on that mod whom has do it? How much to parts and for install , SOTP feel etc... I know nothing about it. Should I consider any other gear. I know somebody put in 513 or something like that.

thx patrick

Patrick,

I have put in the 4:56's and then changed those out to 4:88's. It's the best thing I have done for this truck. Gotta shift a little more often, but who doesn't like shifting? 4:56's will help also!!

At 80 MPH in 6th I am running around 1900 RPM with the 4:88's.

If you are gonna stay with a stock motor, i.e. no forced induction or spray, it's the only way to go. Will also increase the life of your clutch.

Now if I could just get BOOMERS NEW shifter!!!:D

They run about$425 and include all the shims etc you need for install. You just need to oil. I was gonna do them myself and was talked out of it by the folks that know better on the forum. Its probably a pro job.

Patrick -

I did the 4.56's and it is a great mod! Got mine from Unitrax for like $375, but I was one of the first to buy them, so I got an introductory price (or at least that's what I was told from Devin). I believe they cost about ~$350 to get installed, as the shop spent some time setting them up just right.

In the 2004 trucks, the 4.11's are simply too high of a gear. I remember being in 1st gear, at idle, rolling through a tight parking lot, feeling as if I was going too fast! I was constantly pushing in the clutch to slow down.

Also, just engaging the clutch from a stop, it seemed as if I needed to ride it some until the truck got moving.

Even on the highway doing about 60-65mph, when I came to a hill, at times I actually had to downshift into 5th to get up the hill - - with a 500hp V-10???? Simply because the engine was only turning around ~1,000rpms.

4.56's cured all of this for me. The truck is much easier to drive in all of the above situations, and still only turns about 1,700rpms on the highway (depending on your speed obviously), which netted me over 17mpg last time I went to the drag strip. That was a 78 mile drive, which the majority was spent on I-95 at about 70-75mph.

I also figure it ws worth about a 1/10 in my 60' time, which is generally considered to be good for 2/10's in your 1/4 mile ET.

I've had them for a year or so now, and I have yet to regret this mod.

(Opportunity for an extra post!:p )

Also forgot to mention, keep in mind what your 1/4 mile goals are. I know I've said it before, but with the 4.56's, 4th gear will wind out at about 118mpg, IIRC. With 4.88's, it will be even lower. If you get fast enough, shifting to 5th gear (overdrive) will most likely hurt your ET's.

Our pal Silverback figured all of this out at the old place and had a sticky there - not sure if it's here.

**Found It** http://vtcoa.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32

W/ 4.56's - 118 in 4th gear
W/ 4.88's - 110 in 4th gear

With my current mods, I fully expect to go over 110mph,,, if I can ever get to the strip...

Thanks Mike that is great info. I was talking with a friend last night whom mentioned I should swap it out for sure. Not to mention it wont affect my engine warranty at all. I had actually never thougth of that. Other than 456 or 488 gears, the next question is, whom on Maui can actually do the job?

So Marc, you had put in 456 then swapped to 488's. Hummm.....I really have no highways here to drive on. I have only put it into 6th a few time just to see what it was like. There is literally only one road to where you might use it...speed limit is 55 mph there. So highway driving is not an issue. I spend 95% of my time below 60 mph. So if I am going to the track without any intentions of SC, turbo or spray in the future will I still be able to cross the finish line in 4th gear?

Well Patrick, based on the numbers posted some time ago, It was 110 MPH at 6000 rpm in 4th. I don't know how accurate those #'s are!! I just got back from cruisin and I put in in 6th at 80 MPH and was at 1950 RPM.

I don't think the stock truck is gonna do a whole lot more than 110 in the 1/4. Most of the trap speeds for stock that I have seen have been 100-106 MPH.

Then again, if you do decide to put on some slicks with a smaller wheel dia you definitely will be putting it in 5th.

IMO the benifits outway the penalty for having to shift 1 more time though.

Hell of alot more fun to drive, less wear on the clutch, and a better jump when your in 2nd & 3rd!!

Now where in the hell are those new shifter's Boomer???:D :D

I go 108 mph in the 1/4 and I hit the finish line immediately after shifting into 4th gear. I don't see how you all are getting anywhere near 5th gear in the 1/4

:dontknow:

I would think any Trans shop should be able to do the rear gear swap for you. Maybe ask around a bit and make a few phone calls.

If you have no further mod plans, then I think you could get away with 4.88's, based on your mph in your sig. BUT, if you have any plans for a Flash or header and/or mid pipes(or whatever), you may want to go with 4.56's, IMO.

When I mentioned 110mph with the 4.88's, that's at the 6,000 REDline! 118mph with the 4.56's will give you a little bit of room to play, without overrevving the engine through the traps.

ALSO, this is ALL based on keeping the STOCK tire size and height!

Ok Mike, I do plan on loosing the cats for Boomers mids. Maybe a flash not sure yet. If those mods put me into the redline in fourth gear with the 4:88's then thats not good. Maybe the 4:56's would better suit my needs.

This is all good info, thank you sir!!;)

patrick,i'm considering the gear swap too, i talked to unitrax and they helped me find a reputable shop in my area, i'm sure they can do the same for you!:D

i read somewhere that someone found new 05 rear ends avail for sale from an over production that were less money that buing gears and swapping them.

So after its all said and done we are looking at about 700 bucks installed?

Now that would be freakin' sweet!! As long as you had a place to store the stock diff. Or sell it.
I did this years ago with my '85 Mustang GT. Bought a complete diff from Ford Motorsport, less the axles and brakes, for $600, with 355 gears already installed. Dad and me installed it in one day and all was good! IMO, definitely the way to go if the price is right!

If you do purchase gears and have them installed, better plan on about $800 to be safe.

Yeah - my guess would be at least 2 mph more from each of those mods, so with 4.88's you'd be cutting it real close to redline.

Well then 4:56 gears will be the ones. And as far as finding a entire rear axle.....that wouldnt work for me since it would have to be shipped to me and that would offset any savings.

Marc, have you run at the track with your 4:88's? Just curious since you have so many mods, wondering if you can make it without shifting into 5th.
