My "Little" Project..

It's FUN pulling all those old nails out of the wall, aint it? :D :p

Looks good, bud! Be sure to use at LEAST R30 insulation in the ceiling (you'll thank me later. ;) )..... I would have someone do the rest of the house too (blown cellulose insulation would be best for that. At least 12" worth). You'll have the coolest house on the street! (and the lowest electric bill :) )

I definitely need to do something about the insulation! We have been talking about it for a while now. I was going to roll some new pink stuff up there, but there just isn't room!

Can you blow in the new cellulose shit over the old stuff??

I figured out that I loose a LOT of energy through the doorway to my office. The office sits in the addition, and is poorly insulated. When they put up the plastic for dust, they blocked that doorway, and it got really hot in there, really quickly, even with the A/C vent in that area!

I have to pull part of the ceiling apart to find a leak anyway, so while I am up there, I will be insulating the shit out of it!!;)

1. Yes! You can use cellulose insulation over the existing fiberglass (it's actually recommended by Owens Corning)

2. I would have a professional do the blown-in stuff. NOT because I don't think you can do it.... but, because their equipment and product is MUCH better than you can get at Lowes or HD. ..... Also, they will be able to get an even coverage, which is CRUCIAL. They will also check any heat sorces in the attic (ie- can lights) to make sure they are "IC" rated, and act accordingly. They can also wrap your ductwork, which would keep the air running from your HVAC up to 20% cooler/warmer....

I used to install insulation professionally (did it for about 6 years, on and off). :) It's NASTY shit..... so, that would be the "3rd" reason to have someone else do it. :D ;)

Cool! Thanks for the info Jake!

I just had all new duct work put in about 2 months ago. Made a big difference in how well the A/C worked!

What do you think this little 1100sf would run for 12" of blown in?? Any ideas?

Once you are finished would you mind coming to Illinois for a couple of months?

I have a couple of small projects that need some attention...

Ah, hell.... I've been outta the game for about 8 years now.... :dontknow: But, if I remember right (I was just a grunt), I think we charged $0.74/sf... :hmmmm2:  :dontknow:

But, like I said... It would all depend on what you NEED. :)

That's cool, thanks again for getting me thinking about that!

Here's what the kitchen looked like last night when work was finishing up. Things are progressing, should look a lot different tonight as the sheetrock is going up as I type this!

Had to frame the pass-through up a little to match the sink placement.

Lights in, A/C vent in place, and insulation going in.

Sound barrier.

More a little later....

Some advise

May I suggest putting in nail plates where the electrical wires go thru the studs. Also put in romex staples on your romex wires coming down from the ceiling. While you do that also tie in a ground wire to your plumbing drain lines as long as they are steel to act as an additional ground for your electrical since you are using romex.

Great advice! But too late! :D:D

We have done all of that, except the grounding, the pipes are copper.

Thanks Brad!
