My SRT......accident.

Heading down to get tear offs before heading out for the last dirtbike race of the season I managed to get in an accident with my SRT. I was approaching an intersection doing 50-55mph. I had a Harley in front of me indicating a right turn. Had a truck a bit close behind me and another Harley in the lane next to me but about 2 lengths back. Light turns yellow and HD in front stops quickly rather than making the turn. Split sec decision I decide to change lanes and enter the intersection on the yellow. I was more concerned that if I braked hard, would have had to, the truck behind me might not have been alert or unable to stop as fast as me and I'd have taken the Harley guy out when he hit me from behind.

It was still yellow as I entered the intersection but at that instant an Acura MDX, who was in the opposing left lane waiting to go, decided, well, to go. I swerved but she still hit me on my back left side. Truck spun sideways from the impact but managed to straighten it out. Went for the brakes and nothing. Pumped them for a second time and still nothing. Downshifted through the gears then killed the engine and used the clutch to come to a stop.

I took a quick glance as I got out and looked back up the street and saw the MDX in the middle with car parts scattered all over. Just as I was about to jog back to the intersection Police pulled up so I waited.

Luckily, no injuries to anyone. Police were unable to determine fault so that leaves me working with her insurance to make that determination. I don't carry collision on my vehicles. Her comment to the police officer was classic....I thought he would stop.

Hind site I should have stopped but felt certain that Harley guy would have suffered the worse if anything went wrong. I'll take bent metal and broken plastic any day. Why no brakes? Most of the impact was to my rear tire. It appears the impact sheared the positioning pin for the axle/spring as the axle was approx 1" further back and somehow my caliper snapped at the mount cutting my brake line.

Regardless, my SRT is now worthless to me. I will not drive a damaged vehicle nor will I fix it. I don't want anything to do with it. As far as I'm concerned, when the flatbed loaded it and drove off I never want to see it again. That being said, anyone willing to give me $14,000 cash its yours. While the title is free and clear as well as in my name I did accidentally deposit my title in the wrong safety deposit box. This particular box can only be opened 2X a year. My wife recently opened the box to get something for herself but forgot to pull the title out (damn forgetful women!) thus I would not be able to transfer title for 5 months, 7 days and 14hrs......:eek:

Sorry to hear that, Chuck. Glad you (and the others) are okay.

If it was yellow in your direction, it should have been red in her direction. To me, that's running a red light. :)

Also, as a tip: If your regular brakes (hydraulics) fail, your parking brake should still work. It's a mechanical/cable system that's separate from the hydraulics.

Looks like you're going to own the truck for another 5 months, 7 days, and 14hrs.... :dontknow: (we've been through this once before on here... not trying to be an ass... :eek: )

Thus I was being a bit tongue in cheek. I guess I should have been more obvious with my humor....or lack thereof.

Kevan....thanks, I thought of that moments after getting the truck stopped, though, having only one caliper attached might not have been as effective.

Yes, I'll make the GTG in January. Hopefully sporting some fresh paint, new rim, tire, caliper and body cladding. Might be a good time to shave that rear tailgate latch. :rock:

That's what's cool about the "hat-in-rotor" design of our rear brakes: Even if the caliper is gone, the parking brake still works.
In order for the parking brake to fail, you'd have to either cut the cable (which would require some type of sharp object to intersect the cable on the inside of the frame) or remove the rotor entirely (somehow).
If enough force is applied to remove a 14.1" cast iron rotor, stopping is the least of your worries. :)

I hope you didn't tell the cop that the light was yellow (amber) and you went thought it to avoid a collission. In all states the amber light means "stop if its safe to do so" but road conditions are usually what determines whats safe as this is the only thing one can really prove. Other drivers on the road and their relation to you vehicle are hard to determine and wont be factored in when assuming fault unless a witness stops and provides a sworn statement. If there's significant damage to each vehicle, her insurance company might do an entire reconstruction. They can find out the amount of drag the road has, the timing of the light, measure skid marks etc... and determine you speed and weather or not you could have safely stopped in time for the signal. I say its her fault if she was turning and in the intersection but for gods sake never admit to anything (assuming you did). Running a yellow light is failure to obey a control signal (stop light) which could make the accident your fault. But if I understand right, she was traveling in the opposite direction and turning while already in the intersection. In this case, the traffic signal has no real determination on fault as you would still have the right of way. Good luck and I'm sure it will turn out good for you! BTW, SirMichales has the kit to shave you tailgate handle and relocate it to the inside of the tailgate. Its about $50 and looks sweet as hell.
 
Something funny here about that brakes. Even if one wheel, rotor, and caliper is gone, the two opposite corners should have worked. That is why there is two system on the vehicles. Been this way for years.
 
Sorry to hear of the acident... but certainly glad there were no injuries.
I do have a new set of 04' rear OEM Calipers here in the garage...pm me if you need them.

that was also my first reaction... don't we have seperate circuits for safety :dontknow: :confused:

With one line cut the master cylnider would never build any pressure, so although the other circuit is still fine, there would be no way to build pressure. Sickness has it right weith the e-brake, it uses the inside of the rotor with a mini drum set-up, unless the whole rotor comes off the ebake will still work...

Take a look at your master cylinder. It has two circuits. If one is cut, the other should still work.
 
Sounds like she hit you in the back, which indicates she began turning after you entered the intersection given verification of light timing and speed... That will hopefully be on your side.

I'm certain the motorcyclist appreciates it very much. I know I do just hearing about it. Bikes are everywhere!
