You know, I really think it might be the time to take care of these crazy MF'ers. We should not allow anyone to threaten us in this manner. And I can't see any way it will get better, only worse.
***************************************************

North Korea would respond to a pre-emptive U.S. military attack with an "annihilating strike and a nuclear war," the state-run media said Monday, heightening anti-U.S. rhetoric amid close scrutiny of its missile program.

The Korean Central News Agency, citing an unidentified Rodong Sinmun newspaper "analyst," accused the United States of increasing military pressure on the isolated communist state and basing new spy planes on the Korean Peninsula.

The North Korean threat of retaliation, which is often voiced by its state-controlled media, comes amid U.S. official reports that Pyongyang has shown signs of preparing for a test of a long-range missile. North Korea claims it has the right to such a launch.

On Friday, Pyongyang accused the United States of driving the situation on the Korean Peninsula "to the brink of war," and said it is fully prepared to counter any U.S. aggression.

Monday's report accused Washington of escalating military pressure on the country with war exercises, a massive arms buildup and aerial espionage by basing new spy planes in South Korea.

"This is a grave military provocation and blackmail to the DPRK, being an indication that the U.S. is rapidly pushing ahead in various fields with the extremely dangerous war moves," the dispatch said.

"The army and people of the DPRK are now in full preparedness to answer a pre-emptive attack with a relentless annihilating strike and a nuclear war with a mighty nuclear deterrent," the report said.

DPRK stands for the North's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

White House spokesman Tony Snow refused to respond to what he called "a hypothetical situation."

"It is a statement about what may happen if something that hasn't happened happened, if you follow my drift," he said.

North Korea routinely accuses the U.S. of aerial espionage, issuing a tally of such flights at the end of every month. The U.S. military doesn't comment, although it acknowledges monitoring North Korean military activity.

Washington and Japan have said in recent weeks that spy satellite images show North Korea has taken steps to prepare a long-range Taepodong-2 missile for a test-launch.

Estimates for the range of the missile vary widely, but at least one U.S. study said it could be able to reach parts of the United States with a light payload.

Speculation that Pyongyang could fire the missile has waned in recent days since the country's top ally and a major source of its energy supplies, China, reportedly urged North Korea not to go ahead with the test.

Meanwhile, a South Korean government official said Seoul is considering buying U.S. shipborne SM-2 missiles to bolster its missile-defense system.

The move is the latest by South Korea and Japan to strengthen their defenses amid signs of the North Korean missile test. Seoul announced last week the purchase of Patriot interceptor missiles from Germany.

SM-2 missiles, however, are reportedly effective against cruise missiles and at striking aircraft but would not be able to hit a long-range missile.

"I understand that we have requested information" on the missiles for purchase, said Park Sung-soo, an official at the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, without elaborating.

The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of the possible sale last week, according to its Web site. The order would be for 48 SM-2 Block IIIB tactical standard missiles and associated equipment and training.

The agency estimated the cost at $111 million.

Should be interesting how this develops moving forward. This is tens times harder to handle than the Saddam regime in Iraq was.

Actually this time we have some strong support so it shouldn't hopefully be a mess.

I lived in South Korea, speak Korean and have followed this stuff very closely. North Korea's bark is worse than it's bite. They print all kinds of propaganda for the benefit of their population including these allocations of US build up and military exercises. That's how they keep them in fear and under control. Their people have no clue and even believe that food aid arriving with US labels is "tribute" because we fear their military so much. The truth is that their people are starving. The current regime is on the verge of collapse and will soon go the way of the Soviet Union. We actually have held Japan back from preemptive strikes but if they start testing missiles and push too far, it's likely that Japan (with their "police" force) will make South Korea an island. It certainly is interesting to see these events unfold.

No sir. This would not be anything like Iraq.

Occupancies have never and will never work. We wouldnt be overthrowing a regime in attempt to replace it with our own democracy (Iraq), we would be annihilating a country's entire populace from existence. Not one ground soldier would be sent in, nor lost.

Nuclear war with North Korea would be a very short affair. Very. Very very. Very. Kim knows this, and so do his countrymen. They aren't this stupid, trust me.

Would make for a helluva (short) fireworks sho tho. :D I'll bring the wieners!!

There has never been a nation so over-stated in military capability than N. Korea. The country already starves. Think if China, S. Korea alone stopped sending them aide. Think of embargos from Japan, Taiwan and the rest of the Pacific. They wouldnt be able to afford a match to light a stick of fuggin borrowed dynamite.

This Elvis wannabe is a crazed loose cannon. I don't see his regime going anywhere soon, at least not without a little help from us. Look at Cuba, they haven't had 2 nickels to rub together for the last 30 years and that doesn't matter one bit, the regime is still in power. I think we need to anihalate them. I really don't see China getting involved, they have too much at stake I figure. I wouldn't be surprised if China wouldn't secretly want to see us blow them off the map. This guy has got to be an embarrasment and a constant source of aggravation for them. I don't think that we can sit idly by though, as some nutjob threatens us. Sooner or later he is going to use a nuke against someone. I really believe it is inevitable. Say he finds out today that he has 3 months to live from cancer, he just might say F it and decide to blow somebody up. We need to take action, no 2 ways about it. I say a couple of strikes on any of their known nuclear and conventional weapons facilities as well as a strike on him. Maybe if we cut off the head the body will die. In fact, I think it is much more likely that we could have success here than in Iraq as far as promoting a stable democracy.

Of all the crazy folks out there, this guy is the craziest and if anyone would do something stupid, it would be him...IMHO. With Iran, N. Korea and the Middle East all boiling at once, I sure hope we don't end up with WW III, but I can see how we could get there pretty easily at this point.

I agree with Big Asp and TJ...............

In addition, I believe these are conflicts with governments and not with nations of citizens......... For this reason, I would not recommend nuking an entire nation (of mostly innocent people) into oblivion... After all, why punish an entire people living under an oppressive evil regime for the sins of the oppressors.

I'm a way right wing kinda guy, but I'm not into the wholesale incineration of innocent people. We are talking about human beings here. Yes, take out the evil government, bomb the shit out of it. But nuking an entire nation into a sea of glass is like like nepalming your house (and family) in order to kill a few pesky fire ants.

I agree with you completely, I just hope we are given the option of thining with our big head and don't end up having to react instead of act. These goverments don't give a crap for the life(s) limb(s) of their people it seems. My concern is that if they thought for a minute they could strike first they hit the button without pause. It's matter of time before one of them gets that capability and then we're gonna be faced with some big decisions...

I think a Star Wars defense system, with lasers or other weapons capable of instantaneously vaporizing an ICBM from a satellite base would be the ticket.

Even the threat (by our dear departed Ronald Reagan) was sufficient to make the enemies of freedom shit in their pants. Hell, the threat of Star Wars brought down the Berlin Wall..... but (it) only temporarily derailed communism.

Communism surely has never died, it's simply recuperating in the hospital of One World ideology and globalism.... In other words, The United Nations. Now if there's an insitiution that the government should excise. Send all those bastards back to from whence they came.

The difference then was we were dealing with somewhat rational people/idealology, that understood and considered the potential reaction to their action, we are not now. You cannot threaten someone who lives for the day they get to die for their cause, there is no effective deterrent in that situation.

I agree, and thats what I was implying...Not a conventional war but a diplomatic chess game.

You guys have got to see these. Rare photos from inside North Korea:

http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?t=82755

I found them fascinating. I have been studying the DPRK for about the last six months, mostly on intrigue, and knowing that Kim was (for years, is, and will be) a forseeable possible problem.

These will truly give you all an idea of what we are dealing with. Dont know why I didnt think of posting this before now, known about them since they were posted. Forgive me.

This is truly a look into a different world.

Edit: There are several, so scroll down.

Yer right Teej............fascinating and so sad as well.

People in this country should see all there is to see from around the world and appreciate what a wonderful and blessed country we have.... after all, we have paid for it with the blood of our ancestors and family members.

People come from every corner of the planet to live here.... Unfortunately, some (a minority) have come here for all the wrong reasons...

Great insights, TJ...Thanks alot...

Sounds like an excellent market for about a billion rubber handled bolt cutters...

Know any proficient black marketeers who specialize in NK?

......could be a tidy little bundle in it for us....

Haha, no doubt.

I had a relative who was stationed in South Korea as an air traffic controller, the pilots would tell us that you could see where the DMZ ended and the north was just brown and horrible looking. If the north ever attacks, they said they would just throw food at them and the invasion would stop clear in its tracks.

That's it,

Hold a humongous cook out right on the DMZ.... With an immense BBQ and all you can eat for about a bazillion people. The Air Force could drop leaflets over the big cities inviting everyone over to the south.

We'd need an immense PA system and could get some top bands to play... Hell, I bet Paul McCartney would be glad to play...he loves that kinda commie liberation shit. Bono and U2 could come too.... Hey, musicians are liberals mostly...what can ya do?

There'd be an avalanche of people coming over the border that would be too big for the NK troops to hold back.... Even the troops themselves would defect.
