New Bling

Well, when I lived on Oahu there were always places to go to get a sticker if your car was even close to legal. ;) You should have seen the Island Beater that I had to haul around my SCUBA gear!
When you get there, as a military member they will give you a little sticker on your ID. It's call a Kama' Aina sticker, and in a lot of places it will make the locals treat you a little better. (Even though they depend heavily on tourism, they don't like tourists!) It will get you discounts at places and so on. It basically lets them know you are not a regular haole. (pronounced: Howlie)

Yah! I know all about the "Haole" thing, one of the guys in my class is from Kanehoe and he tell's me all the time about how his Island was stolen from his people and that's why there is a deep seeded resentment...which i think is understandable!
 
Yeah, but you can get around that by being patient and understanding. Sometimes customer service is not really important, unless you are a real native. I have been standing in a store trying to buy something and been (literally) looked around, so that the store owner could help a local and not me. I just waited patiently and eventually I was the only one in the store, and I got what I wanted! This happened quite a bit. But it seemed like after waiting and not making a fuss, I got more respect. It is definitely not in your best interest to make a fuss and get indignant! They really don't like that, and I have seen a store owner refuse a customer for that. She actually went so far as to close the store!

18 years in Hawaii..........its a way of life here, you either get use to it and NOT let it bother you or...... go back to the mainland.
