Well guys... I might have a new job in the next 3-4 weeks... I have been with my current employer for 5 years now... really like them, and they have been good to me... however we are going through a merger and my departments jobs are uncertain at best.

I have been presented with a really nice opportunity.

I would be the Field Application Engineer - Hospital Information Security. Basically, supporting the companies security application at their clients that are hospitals/healthcare, as well as going out with the sales person amd demonstrating the products capabilities (not selling it myself, just assisting the sales person with a "real demo")

The compensation package is really good... good salary, stock options, bonuses, and profit sharing.

The company has been around for 4 years, and they have about 10 employees.

It would require some travel, but not alot.. maybe 1 week a month.

I should have the offer next week...

I am a little torn about it.. but thinking that it is the right thing to do...

Sounds like you would be doing HIPAA stuff. Did some pre-sales engineering stuff years back for firewalls/IDS. Wasn't bad, though I was always more comfortable working in our SOC in the trenches. Good luck with it, small companies are usually way better I've found.

Went through a few mergers (acquisitions) myself. Some good, some bad. But none were as good as the original company I worked for.

Yep.. HIPAA and the associated security rule is what I specialize in... I work for a hospital right now.

Been through several mergers myself, and I generally stay to the dying end... because I am loyal... but those have allways turned out bad where I got the short end of the stick... so now I am looking out for number one.

The way they found me is the CEO is my former boss from a job I held in 2000-2002... and he really liked my work ethic.

I agree small companies are usually the best way to go... this company has a product that really fills a serious void in the security field....

There is NO JOB SECURITY right now.... If it's a better/lateral deal, and the alternative option is a "uncertain future".... TAKE IT! This is NO TIME to be reliant on a current employer. .......... Just ask the SEVERAL folks on this very forum (that had VERY secure jobs), and I would think they would tell you the same. The times are changing. People (read: fresh, graduated, NEW, "MBA-Babies") started a trend... get training at a reputable company, add this to resume, and LEAVE to a bigger-better company. The college-kids are entering the workforce in GROVES. There is ALWAYS fresh meat. They ride the wave..... You should do the same, IMO. Or get caught in the "under-tow". It's just the way things are, right now. :(

Good luck! I say go for it, better to look out for yourself in today's market. Way to many uncertainties!

May be time to consider going into business for yourself.... just a thought....
