Sitting here watching the International Auto Show, and see that the new viper has 600hp. Anyone know where they got the extra ponies? Guess the ZO6 just took the backseat again.

The wildest part of the new 8.4L is the cam. It's still a single cam bore, pushrod engine, but the intake cam is hollow with the exhaust cam running inside. They use oil pressure controlled by the PCM to control the lobe seperation angle to get variable valve timing. Pretty ingenious, but I wonder about its durability.
Honestly though, I think most of the horsepower came from raising the compression almost a whole point.

They also bored out the cylinder walls by 1 mm.

Yeah, I'd love to see the drawings. I have a feeling they are driving the exhaust cam (center) with the cam sprocket and varying the intake timing. Varying the exhaust timing on a N/A engine would have little effect, but being able to control the closing point of the intake valve could keep your dynamic compression at optimum throughout the entire RPM range.
