i was racing tonight at the track of course - and did a couple runs with the NOS and to make a long story short - on the 3rd run my air cleaner box blew up. it was LOUD.

I'm on the stock computer since my stage2 is being re-flashed for 91.

so does anyone know what caused the nitrous to explode like that?

#1. intake manifold was very very HOT. but could that ignite it?

#2. maybe a misfire during shifting?

i have no clue, but luckilly nothing besides the plastic intake box and rubber intake tube were damaged.

Shit Mike , I have a stock air box and the K&N maybe you can stop by after work and pick them up.
 
I remember a "PINKS" episode where a Mustang blew off his hood because of a nitrous malfunction. Glad it was only the airbox that blew and not the motor!!

So, what were your times?
 
i saw a brand new gt-500 blow the charger right through the hood from a 250 shot. not a pretty sight
 
the times were not worth mentioning. i didn't think to check the bottle pressure, but I'm guessing it was at least 900 psi. i wasn't getting any traction in 3rd gear.
 
I was there racing Mike when it happened.:confused: I'm glad it was only the air box and some wiring. Here are some pics of the aftermath.

Nitrous can be scary shit, which is why I personally would never consider running it.

Considering what happened, you are damn lucky to still have an engine left. Hell, some lose their entire vehicle due to nitrous back fires.

Glad to hear it was only the air box and a couple wires that you lost.
 
Wondering how the spray got to the air box? Where are you injecting? Did you miss a shift?

It's a backfire Roy. It's going to find the place of least resistance and blow out that area.

That's why positive displacement blowers have blow off plates or popoff valves in the manifold in case of backfires. That pressure needs to go somewhere.
 
A few things:
When did it explode (RPM, gear, etc.)?
Do you have a window switch to prevent spraying below 3K/above 6K RPM
How big of a shot?
Where is your nozzle located?
Wet shot or dry?
What plugs and gap?
 
Dont mess with that.Only thing I ever did was to inhale it out of the Redi whip cans when I was a kid ( mIckey mouse!)

man I am glad I am only running a 325 shot.....you guys are scaring me...

last time I saw Awdisuzu he did not have a window switch and was running stock plugs...:dontknow:

3000 rpm, 1st gear (i had just hit the button)

no, I manually hit it at 3000 rpm, or 2500 if I have sticky enuf tires

175 shot

Where is your nozzle located?
directly in front of the throttle body

Wet shot or dry?
wet

What plugs and gap?
stock, although I have new plugs on order - they just haven't arrived yet.


I'm hoping the backfire was due to the intake manifold being so hot. we did several back to back runs with no resting between.

another thought is that the bottle pressure could have been too high since it was so warm outside. last time I sprayed the NOS it was pretty cool out.

I dunno, maybe I shouldn't go to the track on Sunday. I'm kinda bummed out right now.

Mike you have to go to the track Sunday. We have your choice of a K&N CAI or a stock box. I have a window switch you can use also. Just drop by after work and pick it up.
