NO TRACTION!!!!!

You obviously are much younger than me. I think I remember when I felt the same, but I have become more aware of my mortality as I approach the ultimate shut-down.

I envy you:( :( :(

you're right Prof , but i like to keep the fun no mather how far we are from that ultimate shut-down. I have seen my father struggling for 3 years with Aldzheimer and cancer till his dead , he loved and worked his hole life on cars , i believe he would have choosen himself the " fishtailing"....

Okay, now explain half track burnouts.

OK do a burn out from the start line 1/2 way down the track, whats that got to do with any thing :dontknow:

Sorry BB, not even close.

Ok , Silverback , i once read in our newspaper :

" the unfortunaly drag racer was killed by a burnout half way track while he had a perfect losing traction and start . "

:hmmmm: :hmmmm: :hmmmm: :stupid: :stupid: :stupid: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

First off, I have been kind of baiting you. Not your fault. Just a shitty week at work.

Sorry for being an ass.

Anyway, back to the subject.

This is from your first post on this subject.

I don't normally disagree with my elders, buuutttt. Well I got so say you are a little off on that. A locked or working posi rear ends is what generally causes these problems. When both tires are locked and spinning they pretty much have a mind of their own are are going to try and pass the rear end any way they can, this is even worse when coming trough a corner. If you have an open rear you are going to just spin one tire and the other acts like an anchor holding the rear end from sliding side to side.

Just because both tires are spinning does not automatically lead to loss of control or fishtailing. If this was true the TF and FC boys would not be able to do burnouts.

With a spring/clutch type posi unit like we have it is always trying to send the power to the wheel with the most traction. Hence the fishtailings as it's not equal power being sent to both wheels. Make sense so far?

Okay, now for the locker unit. As soon as it senses an slip under power it locks up. No trying to send power to the wheel with traction. It's sending it to both wheels the same. So in essense the locker style posi unit is like a spool when it's engaged.

This is why Roy is saying what he is saying. The rearend is no longer searching for the wheel with traction. It's like a spool, so he is going nice and straight.

Now other outside influences can affect this. Crown of the road, oil or any other substance that can cause one wheel to have more traction than the other. In that case it will indeed wage the tail. Then you have engine torque that can also influnce it if you let it.

Anyway, I think what I was trying to do was lead you down a path such that you would think about this and maybe arrive at the answer yourself.

Once again, sorry if I came across as an ass. Was not my real intention.

We will forgive you this time. Just don't let it happen again.;) :D

No problem Silver. Their really are too many variables to come to an answer. What yo are saying is right. With our clutch type locker you can get different wheel speeds at each wheel. But even with a locker or spool if the tires are not exactly the same size or some thing as simple as having more traction at one wheel then the other can lead to the back end stepping out. Through water under one tire to make it an extreme case.

I just don't want people to think that because you put a locker in your truck it is going to go straight no mater how nasty of burn out you do. The track is generally the best situation as you have a level surface and if well preped equal traction to both tires.

And to clear up the lockers a little bit. The detroit is always locked up unless you are turning a corner and then it is suppose to unlock.

As far as the clutch type units that come in the trucks. Yea they say they are suppose to send power to the wheel with the most traction but in reality the one with the least gets all the power. I have even had my truck do this a couple of time in a hard right corner, the right rear is unloaded do to all the weight shifting to the left rear. Stab the gas and the light right rear goes up in smoke.

Can't tell ya how many kids I have seen out off-roadin with one tire up in the air that is spinning and the traction tire is just sitting their. They have this puzzled look on their face as they say but it's got a posi, LOL

What can I say, I'm only a man and well some time I don't think with the right head......

GHB sorry bout your truck dude!!! I cant imagine how little traction you have with those 5.13's. My 4.88's always burn the wheels off in first and second at WOT.

Nascar.....what rear end do they use? Locker or not?

Last I knew most were running Detroits, but that could have changed.

I believe that I read that the Detroit Locker is required in NASCAR vehicles.

Yea you are right, they don't have enough poop to do a burn out like that.:D

R/C's are the shit :star:

Exactly your right we would have layed all that torque to the pavemet. And would have Skyrocked in a Straight line and would have said what is that little Spec in my rear view mirror!!!
