With many of the members here losing their jobs, I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread dedicated to jobs that may be available in our respective areas. I know that most probably don't want to move, but some may not have any other choice. So maybe this is an opportunity to start our own job bank.

As is the case in other parts of the country, the Charlotte NC area has experienced a significant dropoff in construction. At last report, new residential housing permits were down approximately 40%. However, commercial activity seems to still be moving forward.

The news reported several weeks ago that experienced welders are still in high demand, with very lucrative annual earnings. So those with welding skills may want to look in the Charlotte and Raleigh areas to see what's available.

Good luck to everyone that needs it.

Like you said experienced welders are in high demand just about everywhere!

This is a great idea for a thread, thanks for starting this. There is no good reason that we shouldn't be using the built in network here. I'll start by posting up my experience. I think anybody looking for a job should do the same, whether they are working now or not.

I have about 10 years in information security. During this time I held a bunch of different positions. I started as a security engineer and moved into technical management, eventually managing all the technical resources for a company that provided outsourced, managed security services. After a couple of acquisitions I was placed into a customer management position, managing large channel partner relationships, including our largest customer who contracted with us for $2+ million per month.

I have been in school for water management, and will be taking my first state certification exam next month for a distribution operator II, and taking the treatment operator II in May. I have no doubt that I will pass both. I should complete my degree in water technology during the summer session.

So there you have it, anybody aware of any openings just let me know.

My company is also looking for an Operations Manager in Albuquerque. Preferably an engineer or business major with strong Lean skills. If anyone is interested, send me your resume and salary requirements.

Im a Cell Tower Tech and have been doing it for about 5 years now. I wouldnt recommend this career if you enjoy having a life lol. I also am currently a student working on my BA in Business Management which I should have within a couple more semesters I pray. (2 classes a semester is getting a little expensive). Have had experience in various other things but always chased the dollar as a younger kid.

Probably have avail positions at my company if interested.
I on the other hand am trying to find work in IL currently thats not towers lol.

:D i am finishing up my schooling to be completely certified welder so anyone need a good hard working welder/ fabricator plz pm me :)

This is a great idea! All of my expertise is in selling (duh) and electronics. I have over 10 years experience in the car installation field. I have done thousands of installs in cars ranging from Bentleys to custom 57 stretch limo. I also have vast knowlege in the computer repair field. I was a senior computer technician for a major box for 5 years. I also have management experience in both areas as well: I ran a shop with 10 total installers and all of our computer install business as well. This included inventory ordering, supplies, damages, customer service, schedules, and display maintenance. During this time I was also a key holder which closed a mult-million dollar store and was also accountable for 50+ employees. Currently I am without work here in NC, but making use of the time by finishing my associates and bachelors degree (Ass. of Science in May '09 and Computer Engineering in May '11).

Another Local Fire Department hiring...we work with Tampa on our USAR team...great group of people.

Tampa gets $4 million federal grant to hire additional firefighters

By Rebecca Catalanello, Times Staff Writer
In Print: Wednesday, January 28, 2009

TAMPA — Tampa Fire Rescue has been awarded $4 million to hire 36 firefighters in the next two months, U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor's office reported Tuesday.

The money comes from the federal Department of Homeland Security. The SAFER grant, short for Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response, was designed to help hire and train firefighters, reducing response times.

Capt. Bill Wade of Tampa Fire Rescue said the agency is extremely excited about the grant, in part because it will staff every truck with four firefighters, in line with National Fire Protection Association standards.

"There have been many studies that show that firefighter safety is significantly increased with a four-person crew," Wade said.

Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio has wanted to increase the number of firefighters by seven each year. This gives that plan a jolt, Wade said.

Tampa Fire Rescue currently employs 586 sworn personnel. That number includes everyone from the fire chief to the new hire. The 36 extra positions will bring the number of firefighters on the street each day from 127 to 139.

The money will be awarded Friday, said Castor spokeswoman Ellen Gedalius.

Wade said the department already has plenty of recruits, so filling those 36 slots should be no problem.

Under the terms of the grant, the federal dollars will cover 90 percent of the new hires' salary and benefits during year one of the grant. The federal match will decrease gradually over the following years. And while the city has no obligation to keep funding the positions after the grant has expired, Wade said it is the administration's intent to maintain them.

Temple Terrace Fire Department was also awarded $650,280 to hire six firefighters, according to the SAFER Web site.

Rebecca Catalanello can be reached at [email protected] or (813) 226-3383.
