Oil Filter Comparison

OK, here we go again probably beating a dead horse horse but have a look at these different filters.

In the pictures I have lined up 4 different Mopar oil filters.

Filter #1 is an older FE292
Filter #2 is the "Viper filter" (Part # and Viper logo rubbed off when I changed oil)
Filter #3 is an FE00292 (Replacement for the original FE292)
Filter #4 is a Mopar 5281090BA (Factory original)

Filter #1 -my truck had the Startup whine
Filter #2 -truck still had the startup whine
Filter #3 -haven't tried it on the truck, I use them on my 2 other Mopars
Filter #4 -same as the original from the facory-no startup Whine

Filter #1 -a little taller than the other ones, 8 small holes.
Filter #2 & #3 -look almost identical visually (6 small holes, looks the same on the inside as well)
Filter #4 -8 small holes, but is a little different inside from the other ones.

Another member warned me that I shouldn't be using #4 (the Black one) but so far it's the only one I've tried that doesn't give me the Startup Whine, and it was the one that came on the truck from the factory.

So what the hell should I do? Does anyone really know?:dontknow:

Would really like to know about this ---I have used the Mopar 5281090BA since I bought the truck--use the same one on mt dakota 6 cyl. I have never heard a whine with it and non of them has blown off....

I agree with filter #4. That's the one I found at Wal-mart for like $4.00. I bought 10 or 11 of them in lieu of spending $12.00 each at the dealer for the same filter. Furthermore, start up whine has completely halted since using this filter. I had start up whine with everything else (even M1 filters). My vote is for #4, hands down.

thats because thats not the prob.

would bet you need the oil pump by pass valve up date.

Holy Ken! Go you change your oil every 1000K? LOL! 4 filters and your truck only has like 4K on it! LOL , I used thed synthetic Amsoil filter and the K&N and have had no whine at all (only from the wife when she seen how much all the oil cost )

PS- You better be keeping your 10 too!

I was told by my local Viper tech that the black filter was not to be used on the Viper engines. In track use he has seen them blow off from the pressure and heat that our engines are under. Now normally I take what peole have to say with a grain of salt but this guy seems to know his shit. He has been working on Vipers since their inception in '86 (not sure of year). The first time I brought my truck to have the oil pressure gauge and noise checked out he noticed I had a black filter on the truck. I told him that's how I bought it (used) He told me alot of dealerships use these on Viper engines but he has seen way too many fail in his circuit to suggest them.

About his validity. Could he be lying? Maybe. I doubt it though. This guy (Tom at D and E Dodge) is a circuit official for a national Viper racing league. The guy is about impossible to get ahold of nevertheless get work done from him (only certified guy in our area to work on Vipers) ask Perk he can vouch for that. I stop by from time to time and shoot the shit with him when he is here. He seems really honest and always has ACR Vipers, Viper race cars, and regular Vipers in his 3 bays all the time. Anway he told me to use the Viper logo oil filter so Number 2 is what my girl uses!

I believe that you were told this, there is no reason for me to doubt you.
But has anyone else ever heard of a filter blowing apart? But if it was a common thing I think it would be better well known. The way they are constructed I just can't see that happening. The race application you mentioned would be the ultimate extreme test that's for sure. But I guess what has me confused is that this is the filter that was on it from the factory, and the only one that doesn't have the whine.

I read the sticky about the bypass valve and if I get the whine back I'll try that. What does the bypass valve actually do? Does it make the oil bypass the filter? That can't be good.
For now I would like to just keep using the black filter unless it could cause a problem. (I still have 4 of them)

So I guess what I would like to know is,
Has anyone else ever heard of a problem that could cause damage or failure of any kind using the black filter?

And as for cost from the dealer here in Canada,
the FE00292 was $4
The Black one was $8.74
The Viper one was about $13 or $14 if I remember right and I know it may have different valving or other changes, but it looks just like the FE00292 with an extra logo (And it's paint rubbed off LOL )

I use the K&N no problems or unusal noise as of yet. With 5w30 Royal Purple.

I buy the oil & filter, Then take it to my local shop for them to change it out. They charge me $15.00 and dispose of the old stuff for me.

Crap, I thought a lot of people did there own. I can slide in under the doors but not all the way to the filter and LOL I am not sure where the hell the drain plug is either. Trying to learn. I do see what looks like a fairly good leak on the engine side of the tranny. I THINK thats what I am looking at. I feel like this is somewhat normal, I dont have a puddle just looks a mess. Maybe I should shoot and post some pics. Someone help please

Probably rear main seal, I have had mine done 3 times, Just a guess though. Most shops will let you take a look while it's on the rack.

Have ya got a ditch close by there skinny?

if so you can pull over a ditch, like at the driveway area.

or if you have a curb at ya house, pull one side of the truck up on the curb, carefull not to scar a rim

oil filter , most wally worlds havem, i think they only stock 2 mopar filters.

oil filter located on the front part of the engine, close to the center, but on the passenger side.

the drain plug located at the rear of the oil pan.

jsut be sure to have a large enough pan for the oil, you can find one at like tractor supply that usually works well.

also get you an oil filter wrench to fit the filter whilst at wally world or you will come back cussing us

DONT USE A MONKEY ADJUSTABLE WRENCH TO REMOVE THE DRAIN PLUG it will round it off and ya will be cursing again:argh: :argh: :argh: :argh: :argh: :argh:

when you tighten the oil filter, tighten by hand til its hand tight, then use the wrench and go 1/4 -1/2 turn again.
