Hey folks.
So, I'm changing the oil in the truck. Empty the pan, then pull off the filter (what a mess....).
I plug the pan back up and, pre-fill the new Mopar oil filter with some oil (as per Chuck's suggestion), lube the seal ring, and screw the filter back into place (just past hand-tight).
I refill the engine with some tasty new Mobil 1. Check level....check again....then start truck.

SPLOOSH!

Oil is coming out like a sprinkler from the oil filter! It's a horror show. I quickly shut off the truck and check the filter again. It's still got a little movement, so I break out the oil filter wrench and give it another 1/2 turn.
That should do it.
Rip to WalMart for another 6 qts. of Mobil 1 (I had some spares here). Come back home. Re-fill and check level again. I start the truck....

SPLOOSH!

I now have over 16 quarts of oil all over the garage floor (I'm so pissed).
I pull the filter off again to find out WTF is going on. As I'm unscrewing it, I see the problem:
TWO SEAL RINGS!!!!
Apparently the 2nd one didn't come off with the old filter. I've done a dozen changes in the truck and never had this happen. Oh well. At least I know it's not something major.

Unfortunately, when I pulled the filter off the 2nd time, both rings came off too. I have no idea which one is the old NAPA seal ring, and which one is the new Mopar seal ring.

One is square.
The other is trapezoidal shaped (not-square).

If anyone has a Mopar oil filter handy, could you check the shape of the seal ring and let me know how it's seated in there.

THANKS!

why did you let it run long enough to lose that much oil?

glad you found the problem quickly!

Well, at least you found the problem! These trucks are NOTORIOUS for the old gasket "sticking" to the adapter. :dontknow: :( Makes a BIG mess.

I've never seen a gasket that was NOT round (like the filter). :dontknow:

Dude....Batman couldn't have jumped back into the truck and shut off the engine any faster than I did once I saw the leaking.

I say 16 quarts because I'm now going on my 3rd oil change in as many hours...and the dip stick reads "no stars". :)

The gasket is round, but it's "shape" is either square or trapezoidal.

that happens all the time.. always make sure that the seal from the adapter is off before installing the new filter... JiffyLube has put many$$$ in my pocket for that mistake.usually once a month a get a motor from some independent that makes that mistake.

I would say that JUST ONE gasket (whichever one looks the cleanest/newest) would suffice....... As long as it doesn't leak, you should be fine.....

If there is still an issue, you could always stop by my place (either before or after jemfest) and we can take a look. ;) :) ........ I'm only 40mins from INT. DRIVE.

Thanks Jake, but I need oil BEFORE getting to Orlando. I was trying to leave tonight. That's obviously not happening.

The two gaskets fit equally in both filters, but they are not the same shape. Last thing I want is a leak in the middle of NC at 3AM. :)

I understand..... If it were ME, the "trapazoid" sounds like a better design.... ( you know, from all my mechanical engineering, and geometry PHD's. :D :p ;) :dontknow:  )

Just got back from the horror show known as Wal-Mart at 1AM (27 minutes in line....WAY under-staffed).

They sell the Mopar oil filters there...so I cracked a box and checked:
It's the square one.

It also has two blue paint marks on the outside edge of the seal ring.

The only reason I go to WALLY-WORLD at 1-3AM is to search for the new Die-Cast stuff they put out. ;) :D ..... But, then again, I'm a BIG DORK. :D

They have a Mr. Potato Head Transformer out now....
:D
Truck is freshly oiled and running nicely. No leaks. Idles at about 53psi.
Damn seal ring. Cost me a day in FL.

Upon further inspection, it looks like the "trapezoidal" ring shape is due to it being malformed during use. I'll check with NAPA when I get back, but I believe it was originally square.

I have been in the car biz most of my life. I made that mistake once.

That was in 1969 when I was a brand new Chevron Dealer. The filter gasket started leaking after the customer started to drive away. We stopped him pushed the car back into the service bay and found the same thing you did, 2 gaskets.........:2in1:

Now I always look at the oil filter adapter........:D

I think I'm missing something here, (as usual) what is a "seal from the adapter":dontknow: What adapter? sorry if this question is too simple. I have changed my oil 3X (yes I do check for the old gasket) but where is the "adapter"? and who is "sealing" it?:) Thanks MOPARCONN.

Seal on oil filter = "Adapter" = square o-ring.
Same thing; different terms.

What you're looking for is the ONLY rubber piece on the top of the oil filter.
1. Make sure the new filter has it on there.
2. Make sure the old one is off the engine.
:D

Jack- you're right. I will *never* miss that again. Ever.
Stinker- LOL You think it's funny? Come over here and help me spread some kitty litter ya damn hillbilly....
:p
