New to the truck and trying to learn it in and out. Here's the problem. (I think its a problem) When I crank her up the oil pressure reading is sometimes under the the first mark which is 25psi i believe. When i start driving it goes up to the middle mark which is 50psi i believe. Sometimes when i first crank her up the gauge reads the third mark which is 75psi i believe. Sometimes when im driving its at 50psi and when i stop at a red light it goes below 25psi. The gauge is never 100% consistent. Is my oil pump possibly going bad or is it possibly just a bad gauge?

Thanks Any info is appreciated.:fing02::fing02:

Probably the gauge, Several members have had this problem. If you go to the search at the blue line you may find more info.

sending unit may be going bad. mine did, got stuck on 25 psi, then went to zero. scared the hell out me when it happened. it's not the first sending unit to go, seems to be a not to uncommon occurance with these trucks.

I have to concur:D mine stayed at 75psi. They are shiit, mine went crazy after I clean the motor:dontknow: 25 bucks at napa;)

The pressure will be higher when you first start up. The oil is cold and harder to push through the system. After the oil warms up it is easier to to push so you PSI will be lower. The PSI will be higher while driving and lower while idling. If your PSI stays the same all the time then that would indicate a problem. I don't think you have a problem.

Nothing wrong with your guage...just normal....
I would agree with you Larry, except he says that sometimes it's at the 25 PSI mark on his first start. That's definitely not right. Everything else he said is normal. Sounds like a sending unit may be going bad.

That would mean the pressure sensor is not reading right and not going back to zero. Usuallyy when a guage goes bad the needle sticks or wont move at all. The easiest way to see if it is the sensor is when you turn the key to on it should read ZERO if it shoots to anything else the sensor is bad. Basic troubleshooting for pretty much all types of pressure sensor.;)

Cardaro,

When you first crank up the engine it is cold, so the psi will be higher than normal. After a few minutes it will warm up the pressure will go down. So at idle after it is warm you could see as low as 25 psi.

When you are driving it, you will have a higher psi than idle, your engine is pushing/pumping the oil around the engine.

If you drove it in the past few hours in GA, the oil is still hot, so you will see a low psi at startup. It's hot as Hades down here.

Ok cool. I will pay a lil more attention to it to pin point it to make sure all my conditions are exact as stated. I do remember sometimes first cranking up in the mornings when i was in FL, it started at 25psi and a few seconds later it shot up to 50psi. I understand now why it should start out high and then work its way back down to low. Also I have noticed that my battery gauge does something weird every blue moon. When i crank it up the gauge is at zero and a warning message pops up saying check gauges and then a few seconds later, the battery charge will go to the middle mark and the warning message goes away. Is that possibly the sending unit as well? Thanks!!:rock: :rock: :rock:

Are you bringing it into work tomorrow?
