My dad was at PRI this past week. Kenny, the engine builder at Indy Cylinder Head (IndyHeads.com) brought my broken oil pump down for my dad to inspect. While down there, my dad ran into a guy who claims to have built a lot of engines for Hennessey. He says this oil pump failure is a lot more common than most realize. Not sure why it isn't being reported.
My dad ran into Ted from opel engineering in round lake beach, IL (will post contact info monday). He has been through this problem many times. Nobody seems to know exactly why it is happening. They guess it is harmonics or vibration issue. That is the best guess right now. Don't put a fluid dampner on it, you want one that has rubber on it. Said it would almost try to weld itself together with the fluid dampner.
This guy uses cryogenics, which I think is the proper spelling. They put it in liquid nitrogen and bring it back at a slow temp, at least this is how my dad recalls what he said. He said since doing this, he has yet to see one get eaten up. The cost of doing this is under 50 bucks. For those doing high powered applications, it would be crazy not to do it. When you have it apart, just sent the gears off. I'll be doing it with mine this week.
