My dad was at PRI this past week. Kenny, the engine builder at Indy Cylinder Head (IndyHeads.com) brought my broken oil pump down for my dad to inspect. While down there, my dad ran into a guy who claims to have built a lot of engines for Hennessey. He says this oil pump failure is a lot more common than most realize. Not sure why it isn't being reported.

My dad ran into Ted from opel engineering in round lake beach, IL (will post contact info monday). He has been through this problem many times. Nobody seems to know exactly why it is happening. They guess it is harmonics or vibration issue. That is the best guess right now. Don't put a fluid dampner on it, you want one that has rubber on it. Said it would almost try to weld itself together with the fluid dampner.

This guy uses cryogenics, which I think is the proper spelling. They put it in liquid nitrogen and bring it back at a slow temp, at least this is how my dad recalls what he said. He said since doing this, he has yet to see one get eaten up. The cost of doing this is under 50 bucks. For those doing high powered applications, it would be crazy not to do it. When you have it apart, just sent the gears off. I'll be doing it with mine this week.

THATS GREAT INFO,BE GREAT TO HEAR MORE,EG ARE YOU TALKING CRANK DAMPNER?AND IF SO DOES HE HAVE A RECOMENDATION,AND HOW IS THE OIL PUMP FAILING,GEARS BREAKING APART?THANKS FOR PASSING THIS ON.MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Yea tell us more of the damage it causes. Why does the balancer have anything to do with the oil pump. Is the oil pump anything like on a chevy v8? Where is the pump on a viper?

Will have to ask my dad as he saw it. I'll see him this afternoon.

Pump is inside the timing cover. They believe that the pump takes a crap due to vibration/harmonics created. The pump runs off the crank on the viper motor. They think harmonics get in the crank and hence, the oil pump. The rubber dampner should absorb a lot of the vibration.

As far as the problems it causes, had I gone another mile it would have cost me a crank and a few rods more than likely.

Cryo is used alot in industry . What they say is that it takes any stress built into the part from casting, machineing and that type of stuff . I have had rear end gears treated (stress-relieved) and rifle barrels to true them out . I had a customer who used to do this and while his ride was here he did all my stuff for free .
Have A Kind Day
Mike
