I have the polished rims and want to paint them to be satin black. Is there a way to do it yourself with getting good results? If so, What type of prep work is necessary and what type of paint is recommended?

Paint won't last as long as powder coating (so the tale goes) but when I've painted some of my daily drivers (Jappas) they've lasted very well. I used "normal" exterior auto satin black paints from the hardware store. Give it a light sand (2000 grit or a little less), prime, then paint. Had the BATRAM's wheels powder coated and must admit the finish is cleaner overall. Best of luck, the right will look sweet once done. :)

Urethane's and epoxy type paint holds up the best. Powdercoat would be number 1 choice. You might want to check into Permastar coatings. I've been very pleased how well its held up and heard they were looking at different options...

Whatever paint you decide to go with see or ask for the "materials data sheet". This will give all the info you need for prep, flash times, recoat and best cure rates. Someone mentioned 2000 grit sandpaper. Too fine for any paint that I've ever used. Most manufactures specify max of 400-600 grit final sand. Again, I'd refer the manufacture for best practices for a particular paint.

No. You will not be satisfied.

Powder coat or PermaStar.

The Permastar look nice. I assume the Permastar is a HVOF (high volocity oxy fuel) coating. It will not be cheap. The company is in California. I only know about it from this site.

If it is a HVOF coating any large city will have several vendors available.

Yup, done right it will last. If done incorrectly and prepped wrong then like anything, there will be future issues.
I'd still go powder coated myself over painting, long lasting, proven and an awesome finish but I'm not dissing painting either. :)
