and can not get the damn timing cover off! All bolts are out but it's just not coming off. I've also loosened all oil pan bolts. I can see the dowel pins on the cover are sliding out of the block, so i know their not holding it on. I've checked and double checked, there are NO more bolts holding anything. Any other sugestions? Anything i'm missing?

Make sure you take off the oil pickup tube from the bottom of the block. It also 90s into the bottom of the timing chain cover..

You will have to take out the through-bolts on both engine mounts to be able to lift the engine high enough, to drop the pan enough, to get at the pickup tube.

If you don't do that, you will snap the cover...

Make SURE the engine is well supported as you will have your hands and arms in a less than desirable position if it comes down... :-O

Thanks Ronnie. I appreciate the info.

No charge...;)

Yeah, a cam swap is a relatively time consuming job. It would be nice if you could just pop the t.c. cover off without having to drop the pan but, that's just not the case on the Gen IIIs...

does a new cam help?

The o.e.m. heads and o.e.m. cam are a pretty close match. You can CHANGE where the power band comes in with a new cam; but as mentioned, the overall gain won't be a whole bunch without proper head mods or aftermarket heads...

an off the shelf cam normally gives about 20hp to the ground

with the correct springs, push rods, and rocker arms probably 30-50 depending on the truck

with ported heads or strikers, from 60-100 hp and a custom grind cam

and we will soon be offering head services for you hard core hp freaks, as soon as I get eddies back to check out there work for info

and it will be pretty reasonable, jsut another way to get stinkerized via nascar connections

Stink- Strikers and a good cam can net even more than that.
I gained 145 wheel with Strikers and a small roller (no headers)...

probably so , but I get smart in my old age buddy, quote low numbers, that way they dont come back and kick you in the sac when they dont get those numbers.
plus when they get more than what you said they would you become there hero, they trust you then that you are not like other vendors that promise big huge numbers and they dont come true;)

A wise move.....;)

But I'm still pretty confident in this case; Strikers are Strikers and there are no better high performance heads for the Viper engine.

It can depend on who does the install too... I sent a Striker Head and Cam package overseas a while back and, when I asked about the Installer, here was the answer: quote: "The Installer knows all about Vipers but hasn't done one before"...end quote. (That sent up a few flags!! and the potential was there for things to go horribly wrong...) He must have lucked out because he STILL managed to beat on a C63 AMG with his TRUCK after the install!!

well we are gonna take an 84,000 mile engine, install a custom cam , valve springs push rods, our ported heads, ported intake, and bbk throttle body, an we will get reall world numbers, an should be able to offer the heads for about $2500 and the intake for around $750, we are gonna shoot for 550-600 rwhp on an 84,000 mile engine

Cool...
84,000 miles. It should be good and loose...

Is it all stock right now? Reg Cab?

yessir , comming out of an 04 reg cab, will be putting it in my 04 reg cab, both manual transmissions

What the heck is wrong with this site tonight, I keep getting punted??!!

Anyway-

The way I calculate the results toward your 600 wheel goal:

A "free" 30 HP for the manual transmission, so let's say it's at 425 wheel right now, assuming the engine is in good shape..
Add 10 for the BBK and 10 for the manifold and you are at 445.
That leaves you with 155 horsepower to make up with ported head mods and a cam, or say 125 horsepower for the heads and cam, if you go with a full exhaust mods.
That is a pretty steep goal even with VERY WELL ported o.e.m. heads and a well matched cam; I don't know if you are going to bump the compression or not..??, cam specs?.. There should also be some more power in tuning, etc...

Good luck Tony Mahn!!
