:dontknow: Is that a statement, rhetorical question or simply a special request? Because whatever it is dismist is gonna be pissed as he clinches his fist then swing and a miss.. Cause his thread is being ho'jacked like thissss. He distinctly asked not to chime in with BS... But he's obviously unaware that's not possible around here..

Your tranny needs to come out.

If you have no second gear, by now the rivets in your band have chewed into the drum and it will need replacing too.

Mine failed the same way (more than once) until it got better internals.
You need better parts installed such as a better band or a rigid band, better clutches, drum and some kind of valve body mods/shift kit that will increase line pressure (clamping force).
There is little point replacing your parts with factory parts as it will likely just happen again...
There are replacement autos available that will make the tranny considerably more reliable.
What kind of mods do you have?

I can't deny that. I mean, you cracked Tim's FMITBH conundrum. I certainly wouldn’t have thunk of that one; :congrats: well done.

I had a similar problem within 1 month of buying my truck around 41K miles the tranny started to go in and out of second gear, like it was thinking what it wanted to do...

The problem with these auto's is that they are not electronically controlled and are controlled by hydraulic pressure...Which is the reason a lot immediately switched out the crappy solenoid to the GM style solenoid to increase hydraulic flow....once the stock solenoid gets clogged up with particles from the tranny, you have a tranny time bomb b/c it resricts the hydraulic flow needed to shift the gears..

My tranny was completely rebuilt...new lever, new springs, upgraded and added clutch packs, new solenoid, better bands, better discs basically upgraded everything:rock:

Sounds like you're too late in the game to just add a better solenoid...you need a complete rebuild and it's not cheap if you dont have an extended warranty! Upwards of $2K to do it right!

I know there are other options out there but if you are stock I am convinced the problem lies around the valve body and shift timing. The lack of line pressure in the factory valve bodies causes slow shifting (sliding into gear). This in turn causes the clutches and steels to get torn apart because of the amount of torque these engines generate. I personally had two transmissions destroy the clutches and steels because of this (1st trans 9K, 2nd 4K). 2nd was not as bad because I saw the same problems cropping up and knew what the result would be. The first trans had two factory valve bodies put in it by the way, to no avail (they are crap, hence the issue).

I contacted Dusty at HTS transmissions and he sent me an upgraded valve body, heavy duty band, billet accumulator, and 4.2 shift lever. All this cost under $500. Dealer put this into new 2nd trans because they knew the factory valve bodies suck too. I have not had any problems since and the truck shifts very firm and positive. No delay on the 2-3.

Since you are out of warranty and your trans has failed at this point you would have to have it removed and shipped to Dusty for him to fix. This guy knows what he is doing. He could have tried to sell me 20 things I did not need but he was honest and only sold me what he thought was needed. I did not upgrade the clutches because I am not going FI so he thought they were not needed. Nor did I upgrade anything else like the input shaft (will fail under sustained and frequent high speed operation , 120 and above)

Do a search on the forum for 48RE and read for yourself. Others have replaced transmissions with aftermarket stuff or done GM conversions to the solenoid. I personally feel the 48RE is up to the task it just needs better parts to work right and it is not that expensive to have fixed and fixed right.

I hope this helps you. Good luck.

I agree 100%!
And I also forgot to mention the Valve Body needs upgrading too...
I probably didn't need all the extra's in my tranny but since it was under warranty the guy at ATF wanted to do it right!
Unfortunately your situation got bad so like snake said, it will have to be removed and will more than likely cost more than $500:argh:
A little side not, once you do get your tranny fixed keep up on the filters and adjusting the bands especially the 2nd band

Nice. Looks those guys are doing the exact same thing that Dusty at HTS is doing. By the way my previous trans had the exact same problems as what was shown in the pictures on their site, if I didn't know any better I would think I was looking at the stuff that was pulled from mine. Just further leads me to believe I am right in my convictions with what is wrong with these transmissions. Crappy valve body is the main culprit. ATF even states something similar where all the pics of your internals are.
"... your brakes that the factory transmission isn't going to be around for the long haul. Stock 48RE transmissions are prone to fail under the high horsepower and torque...."

I would just get the trans rebuilt. Might be cheaper than getting a new one and as long as it is done right, it should be good to go.

EDIT Snake beat me to it:D

Give some more details about where you live and where you bough the truck. In the US we have a standard 3 year 36000 mile warranty. But you can buy a extended warranty up to 4 years 48000 miles.

I already had my trany rebuilt by the dealer and I know it's going to happen again. So I paid for the 60k/7 year extended warranty. $1400 is cheap insurance for something I know I will use.

Dang and there's some guy on the forum looking for his third gear... Seriously I've read a lot about this transmission and it seem it can be fixed to handle the hp and torque of our qc's. I like the 6 spd in my rc and figure putting one in my qc will be answer if the auto ever goes.

ATF Speed does there own shift kit built right into the valve body. They replace the valves with custom machined titanium ones on there milling machine, so it is solid. Not just a bolt in shift kit. It works great hard shifts 1st 2nd and 3rd. Great work.
