Started with a small leak, then the typical winding noise, now it will barely hold any fluid at all. I took it to a local shop to get it looked at simply because I don't have time to do it myself, but of course they said the entire system needs to be replaced (hoses, reservoir, pump) and want about 600 to replace it all. If anybody has any of these parts laying around collecting dust Ill buy them, it would really help me out. I just relocated and time/money is tight, especially with it being Christmas.

I thought you had a corvette?? now you have a truck again?

How can I tell if the pump itself has gone bad?

Clean the residual fluid off as best as you can, refill the system and try to trace where it is coming from. When the lines leak they look like the pump but most of the time it isn't.

Funny thing is the power steering pump on our trucks looks almost IDENTICAL to the one on my 1973 Lincoln Mark IV. If its the same, they must be sturdy.

The lines are the weak link.

+1

When I had mine replaced, shop thought my pump died as there was fluid on the bottom of it, they wanted me to replace it. Told them to do just the lines and clean up the pump.

No leaks since then.
