Power Steering pump going

Sounds like my power steering pump is in the failing stages, lots of noise when turning the wheel at a standstill. Does great at regular driving speeds but after talking to a few folks and with Dragons help I think it needs replacing.

So, what all am I in for in replacing it? What else should I replace while I've got the belt off (I need to release the tension in it to get to the pump correct)? I may take it to my local small Dodge dealer since they know me and love the truck. I'm not the best mechanic and would hate to get the project started only to not get it done and not be able to take the truck to a dealer to get it done right.

I was thinking of getting a new belt (what size to the trucks with a Paxton take) and maybe another water pump since we're in the engine compartment already.

What would you guys do if you had to replace the power steering pump? Are there pumps for our trucks that are better then stock?

Stop driving it....you want to catch it before it dumps material into the oil that then circulates down to the steering rack and ends up taking it out as well. When my water pump started to make noise Dodge was only going to replace the pump. Service Mgr was only willing to flush the system out but after having spoken directly to Viper tech who confirmed the oil was contaminated then informed the Mgr that once material is found in the oil all should be replaced.
 
Aw crap, I meant my power steering pump. Red, could you fix the header for the topic? Got another power steering pump coming from Dragon, hoping Boomer can set me up with another belt.

Yep, I meant power steering pump. I'm hoping a mod can fix the title of the thread.
 
power steering pump is pretty cheap for our trucks,both mine went bad,u can probably do it urself,just check the belt for excessive wear although it should be ok

Gotcha!

Any chance your headers burned up the pump? I remember reading about it a couple of years ago. Happened to Roktman I believe.

i dont have headers on either of my trucks,i think its just a bad pump overall,one truck had around 5000 miles the other 60000miles before they both went bad,although the second one went bad because the lines started to fail after 60k
 
Not sure what caused it. Theres just quite a bit of noise when you turn the wheel while the truck is parked. Theres also a bit of resistance in the steering wheel when driving and turning the truck at speeds of speeds of 5 mph and under.

did u check the fluid level?

I checked it monday...halfway between what I thought was empty and full, turned out to be cold and hot. Took a little more out yesterday to get it closer to the cold engine setting.

doesnt look like its leaking,just run to the auto parts store and buy a new one,its not a special order they should have them in stock

I have a NAPA here in western Kansas and thats about it. I've ordered one from Dragon, should be shipped today from what he tells me. Boomer is trying to set me up with a new Paxton belt for the engine, figure I might as well replace that while I'm doing the pump.

Supposedly, Woodhouse checked and changed all the fluids about a year and a half ago when I first got the truck :dontknow:

If I end up taking it to my local Dodge dealer I'll have them change all the fluids while installing the power steering pump.

I agree on keeping them all fresh.
 
i've had to replace a few 04's p/steering pumps. only a couple on the 05's. fan modules on a few of both years
 
Just an update. Towed the SRT to my dealer, come to find out I got the wrong pump. The one I needed has lines that connect to the hydrolic fan. Luckily, they were making a run to one of Denvers parts warehouses (none of the dealers had one) so it should be ready to go today or thursday.

Just wanted to let you guys know that if your pump fails make sure you get the right one...I never thought that there could be 2 of them :dontknow:

Oh yah, this pump also runs about $300, the one I bought was $85...figures!
