Power Steering pump issues?

Yesterday the truck started getting hard to turn intermittently. Temps are slowing creeping up as well. Fluid was low in the pump so I topped it off and the issues are still there. Seems like the A/C is not as cold at idle also. The odd thing is right before it started I hit a huge pot whole with the right front tire. I can't find any damage/leaks.

I thought maybe the belt is loose and I'm going to try and tightened the belt up later if I can figure it out.

This pump is less then a year old (I think) as it is the one Marty put on when the truck broke right after I picked the truck up last year. If the pump is failing would the pump work sometimes and be harder in reverse or would it just fail completely?

When my pump was starting to go on an older car of mine (87 oldsmobile), it was intermittently hard to turn the wheel. But once you forced the steering wheel, it felt normal turning from then on but later it would happen again.

Mine did the same thing, there's a small pin inside the pump that is pressed into the
Housing and it comes loose and the pump loses pressure. If your good take it
Apart and put thepin back in with some glue. Mines still holding.

Also if there is air in the system it is very difficult to bleed it off properly. Fan must be run at 100% to bleed air from the system.

It was the power-steering pump. Which was less then a year old and only had 4K miles on it. I think Marty put an old one on when he changed it out at 3 am at the truck stop. Hopefully this one will last.

Hey Scott, was yours ever difficult to turn the wheel at idle? Then if I give it a lil gas, it loosens up. Is it just the amount of tire on the ground or am I having ps pump probs? TIA

I lost my power steering pump at 2989 miles. Was told at the dealer that the power steering pump has been a problem in these trucks.

It was not hard to turn at start up. But I could feel it even driving around turns. Backing up was the worst. Plus at idle for a long time the temps would start to creep up since the fan runs off the pump. It should not be hard to turn when stopped. You might feel a little resistance cause you are not turning but not a lot. It would also make noise when turning extreme right or left. Sounds like your pump could be getting ready to fail. Just watch it closely.

Your problem sounds like mine. Does yours make any squealing noises when trying to turn the wheels? Mine seems to act up when it is hot outside and after the truck has been warmed up (after sitting in 20 miles of DC traffic ). Other than that, the steering seems to work fine. I had it to the dealer twice, they couldn't replicate the problems, so no fix, yet. I guess mine has to out right fail before it gets replaced :dontknow:

mine had a heavy feel to it.
changed the fluid a couple of times, seemed to help for a bit.
put Stinkers p/s lines on & feels muck lighter & responsive.
lookin at the stock lines about like lookin at the engine oil cooler lines, pos.

Oh oh...i think the pump in my 10 is about to go bye bye....its getting the "need to replace the PS pump soon" symptoms

You can call your local dealer and ask him about prices, but i know i wont be calling my local dealer cuz there prices are super f*ing HIGH!!! i know if i ask them about the pump, they'll probably gonna say, "Price on this is $400" so hell NO i am not lol But if u do a REALLY good search online or with the Vendors here u can get them for less. Good luck

I just don't know if it needs replaced... $300 is a lot to replace something that isn't the source of the problem. Thanks for the part numbers and prices.

Don't wait...If the pump completely lets go you'll have to at the very least flush out the steering rack. Doesn't take much material from the pump to wipe out the internals in the rack....you've just doubled you costs if you wait.

When my pump went dealer was only going to swap out the pump. I spoke with the service mgr directly about my concerns and he agreed after he spoke with the Viper tech. He confirmed material from my pump entered the system. Dealer replaced the rack and flushed the fan module.
