Anyone replaced the muffler only using aftermarket brand such as magnaflow...Only thing I found is systems; cat back such as borla & magnaflow...Doesn't just changing the muffler effect the backflow pressure relating to engine performance...RRVIPER

When I bought my truck it had 2 borla mufflers on, not the cat back. The previous owner also had the rear cats taken out. I really liked the sound and it ran great.

Good Morning! I did a catback system but it was a bit too loud for me so I put on two high flow Imco mufflers and it didn't seem to make a difference in power but it did quiet it down a little. I do notice there is virtually no back pressure.:D

what is "backflow" you speak of? if you're referring to packpressure, then you must be used to 4 cylinders. these trucks put down much more power with open exhaust, as do most large engines.

i have magnaflow too, but its too loud on a qc. its a loud drone that isnt pleasent at all. so I added 2 additional spintech mufflers as well.

Correctamundo! =)

One should be more interested in the scavenging effect the the exhaust system provides. For that dont know what the means.. simply put each exhaust pulse draws out the one behind it in the most efficient way... its parts of the reason why equal lenght headers will get you so much gain. :burnout:

so you have 3 mufflers? or 4? im confused. is there anything you can do for sound without doing headers or cat back systems?

i have the magnaflow and catless mids, it's loud.. not as loud as the hemi i had before but it's loud:D and i love it like that:rock:

oh and welcome round rock viper..... you have a beautiful truck.... you chosed the right color right model and right size:D

Welcome to the site RR Viper.

This is a good question as I was talking about back pressure or lack thereof without cats to a friend yesterday. His take was, "without cats you would loose backpressure and therefore loose torque". Is this true? Or does the viper motor's design change that? My friend has a 5.0 mustang and said he lost torque but gained hp over the 4k rpm mark.

I have always read where we would gain 20 to 25 or so hp by loosing the cats......what does it do to the torque?

thx

You might loose a little low-end torque. But, you don't really "Loose" it... It just moves up the graph a little bit. :)

So inotherwords, the torque just comes on at a higher rpm? My friend was telling me when he cat deleted his mustang it felt as though it lost its balls off the line......noticibly slower. I was trying to tell him...cat delete in our trucks is a good thing...

BTW....Jake thanks for the Christmas card dude!!!:D

Yep, that's what I mean. ;)

No prob. Bro! Glad to have you as family. :D

Black1, so Dodge did do some thinking...In essence, probably staying stock is okay unless you got a lot of money to dish up for just a few more ponies....RRVIPER

I think it has to do with the amount of air that we are moving compared to that of smaller cubic inch engines... comparitivitly we move 80% more air than a 4.6 litre mustang. It also has to do with our firing order... the two extra cylinders add a different level of complex to the situation.

Looks how well diesels perform with no restrictions... most are 6.6litre plus.

Well, diesels have turbos 90% of the time, these turbos run fine with no backpressure at all.-

An 8.3L Viper engine in its stock configuration could lose torque with having very little backpressure. The performance could still see improvements because the gear ratio is so low enough to capitalize on mid range power thus making the mid and higher RPM torque and horsepower gains an advantage :top: The cats still need to go period. The vehicle was literally designed in many ways not to have them…

Reducing backpressure does NOT cause a loss in torque. If that were true, we should be running as many mufflers and resonators under our trucks as possible for more torque...right?... I mean if that were true we would increase backpressure and increase torque...NOT TRUE !!!!!
Increases in airflow through an engine normally bring about corresponding increases in torque.
If your Mustang buddy did lose torque, it is possible his headers' primary pipes are too large for the 302; THAT will kill torque every time. And is doesn't take much of an increase in pipe diameter to really screw things up. It has nothing to do with back pressure however. The m.a.f. sensor and his computer would have taken a while to adjust to the increased flow as well, so immediate gains are sometimes not reasonable to expect.
Removing cats can, and in out trucks will, increase torque. Remember horsepower is just torque measured over some period of time....
