R-squaring heads.....needs????

Hey All,

I just bought the set of ported and worked heads from Roger. Does anyone have a list of additional parts I'll need? Since I have to remove the intake, stock heads, and headers I know I'll need intake, head, header gaskets, SCT re-tune, and new coolant (i'll be changing to a 172* thermostat and using a 75 water/25 coolant mix). Anything else?

I know Dodge likes a 50/50 antifreeze mix in these engines to reduce cavitation.
If the porting operation broke through the rocker plate bolt boss in the intake port, make sure you seal the bolts with some O2 compatible silicone so it won't suck air.
Other than that..... ummmmmm.... patience? :)
Also, don't use a metal scraper of any kind to get whats left of the head gaskets off of the block. They scratch easily. That black material that comes off the head gaskets is less than paper thin and can be kind of bitchy to remove.
P.S. Do me a return favor and let me know if your chambers and piston tops were "sooty" once you pull the heads...thanks!
P.S.S. That plastic conduit that runs along the top of your driver's side valve cover gets brittle after a while and tries to drop junk in your engine when you pull that valve cover; maybe wrap it up before you start.

I would upgrade the valve springs if they have not been replaced.

And what others have said.

Spray on gasket remover can be an aid to stuborn paper gasket deposits.
 
By gaining about 100 crank hp with these heads and current mods, I wont need to upgrade my fuel system?

I didn't.
Your current fuel system should be able to keep up.

thank you Ronnie that's a relief. I had a budget of $400 to spend over the cost of heads. Looks like that will be spent on gaskets alone.

The new gold gaskets will bump up the compression a bit (it all helps).
 
thanks guys for the input. I added the Gold gaskets and hardened pushrods to my list of needs that I sent to Stinker. Anything else.....I mean besides a psychiatrist to help me with this mod addiction. LOL
 
Since you're going to have the intake, thermostat housing, and valve covers off anyway, I would recommend that you box all that up and send it off to Justin for one of his killer powder coat jobs, and I would HIGHLY recommend that you change the spark plug wires out for some MSDs. No sense in having to take things apart more than once...

Just for my edjumication, how do the hardened push rods get me horsepower? Will they make a difference since I'm not going to be adding gobs of hp? I'm hoping these heads will get me close to 500rwhp.
 
takin some of the flex out of the valve train. hell get some roller rocker arms. seems like they are usually good for 10+ ponies

Stock pushrods apparently have a lot of flex. Hardened pushrods are much stiffer and only cost around 130.00. Now roller rockers are around 1500.00 and require taller valve covers.

You can fit T&D rockers under the valve covers;) Tim(vipertruck2933) done it to his truck when he had it a PPJ:rock:

Where can I get them for this price? If that's what they cost, it's a small price to pay.
 
Will I need to purchase new head bolts for the new heads or can I re-use the stock ones?
