A driver was killed in a fiery crash during a drag race today at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, state police said.

Witnesses said the driver, Scott Kalitta, was speeding at an estimated 300 mph during the National Hot Rod Association Super Nationals when the engine of his Toyota Solara exploded in a ball of flames.

"The driver was killed after he lost control of his vehicle," said Sgt. Julian Castellanos, a spokesman for the State Police.

He declined to confirm that Kalitta was the victim, saying his family had not yet been notified.

Lynette Davis, a spokeswoman for Raritan Bay Medical Center in Old Bridge confirmed that Kalitta was brought to the hospital at 4:56 p.m., but she would not release further details pending the notification of family members.

Spectators at the track watched as Kalitta's car exploded, hit a sand trap, then vaulted over a protective catch fence. A slow-moving ambulance took the driver away.

Kalitta, 46, of Palmetto, Fla., was a two-time Top Fuel champion (1994-95) had 18 career victories, 17 of them in the Top Fuel class.

Castellanos said that the event was being taped for ESPN, and police will review the tapes to determine what caused the accident.

ESPN2 has full coverage right now (7:21pm EST).. sad but sometimes reality sucks.

Yep...been watching it... :burnout: :burnout:
Damn shame... died with his boots on, enjoying what he loved to do.
R.I.P Scott Kalitta.

A concrete barrier at the end of the track? That doesn't sound like very good planning.. how about some of the "kitty litter" that you might see elsewhere. RIP...

I WAS THERE

We were very close to the finish line, he exploded literally right in front of us.
Pieces flew everywhere, it was horrible.

It appeared that he went into the sand trap and then over the net into the trees. Is that what happened?

Horrible news and a shock to the racing community.
I hope I get to go doing something I love.

The car Blew up just before the finish line and the fiberglass body went in every direction in a fireball, the concussion from the explosion probably knocked him out. Then the car went wildly into the sand trap. I looked up at the monitor and he seemed to hit the wall just as he was going into the sand trap. They cut the video feed to the monitor just as that was happening. The parachute did deploy but didn't open and he barreled right thru the trap at full speed. Couldn't see anymore after that due to the huge fireball and smoke, dust etc. There was no updates over the loudspeakers but everyone knew it was bad. They cleaned up the track but stopped all runs. When we went to the pits the DHL team was packing up and the look on their faces said it all. Then all the other teams still in staging towed their cars back and loaded them up in the trailers. We waited about an hr and there was still no updates or racing so we left since we had a long drive to Baltimore.

RIP Scott
