I don't know that you could design anything to handle that large of an explosion, certainly not anything that would be small enough to go in a car.
I haven't really heard any details on the accident yet. It sure wouldn't surprise me to hear that he was badly injured and/or unconscious after the initial explosion. That would explain why the car never slowed. I hope for his sake that was the case.
Half the body blew off the car at the finish line, even if there was a fire suppression system big enough with the body gone it wouldn't have worked.
Here is a picture from where we were sitting after they piled up the pieces of the body. I was too in shock to take any pictures when they were spread out and too far away from the sand trap to get a good picture. No one was allowed down there.
