Is the Viper V10 next? :(

Chrysler's future does not come with a Hemi powertrain

It looks like the Hemi engine, an icon for the Chrysler Corporation, won't be included in forthcoming applications due to changing fuel economy standards. Rising gas prices have already hurt sales of vehicles featuring these engines, causing Chrysler to cut back production. Now co-president Jim Press has declared, "The Hemi is not the powertrain of the future." Similar to the direction taken by GM, Chrysler is banking on newly developed V6 powerplants to take the reigns from current V8 options. These Phoenix engines are scheduled to hit production in 2009.

The Hemi engine's downfall is its inability to adapt to features proven to increase efficiency. The large combustion chamber design and dual valve structure leads to blow-by of unburned fuel, thus producing large levels of undesired emissions. The use of dual spark plugs has improved burn in the hemispherical combustion chamber, however, it's a solution that increased cost and complexity. More modern and efficient chamber structures, unlike the Hemi, can fit four valves and utilize dual overhead camshafts. Chrysler plans to implement these features into their future V6 engines, along with cylinder deactivation and variable valve timing.

Thats BS. They should at least keep it as an option for those who want it. the power i get from my hemi is much better than any other magnum engine I have ever had.

They must keep the hemi for the trucks. They generate too much power to go to something else.

Ok so lets see

one week the future challengers of 09 and 10 are gonna have a 6 spd, and a 6.4 HEMI...........

now the HEMI's are gonna be replaced........

they are no longer efficient..........

adn tommorrow, they will have a 525 version of the Hemi......

an the next it will have a turboed v6

then it will have a supercharged v 12

i think I will wait on the v 12:D

Just because the Hemi is not the future does not mean it will be gone next year. It will be a 10 year phase out just as the CAFE standards are slowly introduced. You can bet it will still be available in the SRT's for years to come.

Exactly, basically this is saying that there will be no further development in the HEMI. The new generation 5.7L will probably the last until the new Phoenix engines evolve and eventually take over.

Chevrolet and Ford are also doing the samething. Smaller motors with FI will becoming more of the norm.

Doesn't mean any performance models like the SRT, Shelby, corvette etc., are dead but the means of power will evolve. They will probably more advanced using lighter materials to reduce weight to keep the same performance levels at same or slightly lower HP ratings.

Is ford going to resurrect the Pinto now too?..

It seems like these issues go in cycles..When we were going through the energy crisis in the 70s, it killed the muscle car. It took a long time to recover from that, but eventually they started cranking out the modern muscle cars, and eventually the SRT10. If you think about it, Aside from the introduction of the Viper, there were very few American made hotrods from 73 till recent years. We were subjected to the K car, the Cimarron, the Omni, etc.
As the population ages, there will be a shift in what people want. Most kids these days are driving rice. Can you see Barrett Jackson in about 20 years?..A Mitsubishi will be going for 100k..lol..
The current push toward greener cars is just part of the cycle..In 20 years we will all be driving our fold up George Jetson breifcase cars anyway...And your SRT will be sitting in a hermetically sealed garage to protect it from the acid rain, waiting for the day when you have made enough ethanol in your Popular Mechanics home ethanol still to fill up your tank and drive it for a day to attend the I Nationals at the regional holo-terium..The kids will say Daddy what is that?.Fathers will reply with a big sigh.....An SRT10 son..from the olden days..Pick up your hoverboard and lets go...
