I know you guys are not going to beleive this...but our new Charger SRT8 Super Bee, might be dead. We have had the vehicle less than a week, and we think a rod is knocking. It is at the dealer right now. We installed Corsa exhaust on Friday, and I was driving it home, up a steep hill, going quite slow and started to hear a knocking sound. I had recently filled the car with gas, so I thought I might have filled up with bad gas. Later that night I went an purchased some octane booster, drove it and that did not fix it. Then I reset the computer, and that did not fix it. So not knowing what else to do, we dropped it off at the dealer we purchased it from early Saturday morning. Earlier Friday before and after exhaust install I thought the car was running very hot. 225+ engine temp and the 265 for the oil temp, while both my Viper engined vehicles run at 200 engine temp and 210 oil temp. Service Manager was worried that it was a rod as well. The sound is coming from the engine, and it sounds deep within it. Sounds similar to knocking sound of my dead truck.

Damn, kinda hard on your vehicles arn't you? :dontknow: ;)

Sorry to hear this.:( Kind of takes the polish off the apple in a way when it happens to a brand new vehicle.

True, so sorry to hear of your problems. But better under warranty than just after it expires.

Ahh warranty, it is great. Down side, you will be without a car for a couple weeks for something like that.

Car only has 285 miles on it...wife drove it all week. She was nice to it as well. If it is the engine...then it will be Lemon lawed.

Just found out in another forum that this is certainly not the first SRT8 to go south with a 1# Rod knock. Obviously I don't know what the problem actually is but a rod is the most likely suspect.

Silver...the oil drained out of the Viper Motor. It did not go boom until then.

Don't know how the Lemon Law reads where you are. But I understood it to mean you had to have the same problem multiple times in a specified time period to qualify. Good luck with it.

sorry to hear that! hopefully it's not something that's going to be a lifelong issue...

Sounds like an engine assembly problem. Bearing shattered. I had a 2003 Ford Cobra lemon lawed after only 700 miles. It overheated with 300 miles on it and went down hill from there. It was in the shop for a month.

Colorado Lemon Law states that with in one year and one month of new car purchase...
(a) It shall be presumed that a reasonable number of attempts have been undertaken to conform a motor vehicle to the warranty if:

(i) The same nonconformity has been subject to repair four or more times by the manufacturer, its agent, or its authorized dealer within the warranty term or during a period of one year following the date of the original delivery of the motor vehicle to the consumer, whichever is the earlier date, but such nonconformity continues to exist; or

(ii) The motor vehicle is out of service by reason of repair for a cumulative total of thirty or more business days of the repairer during the term specified in subparagraph (I) of this paragraph (a) or during the period specified in said subparagraph (I), whichever is the earlier date.

I am going to consider a six day work week, so they better get cracking...

That just sucks. Sorry to hear about this. What about your truck, is it getting fixed under warranty?

most of us go a lifetime without blowing a motor, how many have u gone through now?, u could just have badluck but with any new car especially high performance,u shouldnt be pushing it much over 4000 rpms for the first 500 miles

First off no on the Truck, the repair is not warrantable because an aftermarket part failed and almost all the oil in my engine sprayed out while driving it. It really comes out quite quickly when it is under pressure.

And secondly, the statement about pushing it over 4,000 rpms is kind of crap. I don't have any idea how the first 41 miles of the car were put on...was it the General Manager, was it the Lot tech, I have no idea. In this day and age, if the first 500 miles is truly a required break in period I can assure you that the stock computer could easily handle the task of limiting performance if the manufacturer were truly worried about engine break-in/longevity.

I will also say again...this is my wife's car. She drove it nice (I probably won't have) and it "broke" when I was driving it home up a steep hill doing about 35 miles per hour in a residential area. We did nothing wrong in either engine mishap.

LOL, y'all are funny! Anyhow, I break my shit in HARD, break it in like your gonna drive it for the rest of your life. I've been pretty succesfull with this aproatch, there are limits and exceptions (2 strokes).

Dude like I said at LX, my 6.1 makes alot of lifter clatter, and with your engine running 225 could that have been due to a bad t-stat and the oil getting up to 265, could that remove the oils ability to keep the bearing off the journal? Don't get discouraged, shit happens and they will fix it, I don't think you'll get a new car, but I would fight for a NEW engine. Even go as far as to see them uncrate it. One 6.1 is the same as another.

And to the truck, if you would've stopped the truck, would the engine have been saved? And do you recommend that product still. The concept is a lifesaver for cold start but the draw back looks upsetting.

AND HOW DID IT STACK UP AGAINST THE "V"?!?!

GOod luck brother!

The skinny on the Viper engine and oil pressure is this, if the oil pressure falls below 30 psi at around 4K in rpms then the motor is done for. If the check engine light goes off due to low oil pressure, it is more than likely way too late. I heard a rod knock before I even knew there was even potentially a problem. I saw smoke right after the truck started to knock and it was a minute after that, that the check engine light went off. All were a day late and a dollar short as they say. The company's part that failed is examining their part. Obviously they are quite interested, as this is not the only one out there.

Very sorry to hear about your troubles. At least this one is under warranty. Good luck and hopefully this will be in the past very soon.

Just spoke with Service Manager and they are almost positive it is a knocking rod. In any event the engine needs replaced, repair, etc...

CarDude, hopefully all works out for you. The dealer may try to screw you in what they replace on the motor. Make sure you fight so you don't get stuck with parts that may be damaged.

sorry to hear about this. it will all work out I'm sure. as far as lemon law, doesn't sound you qualify yet, 1 failure doesn't qualify you for lemon law.

Yes, I realize I don't officially qualify, I guess I am looking for Dodge to do the right thing. We had the car less than a week before it went belly up. I am not looking for something for nothing...I have a new car it is just not so new anymore. 285 miles on it and it is now dead thru no fault of ours.
